Rich, this is an excellent post. I hope all take note. It is critical, but respectful. People will infer from it what they will and you present your ideas very clearly. You provide a couple of stings, but they don't seem too painful...and your thoughts do make some inroads.
Some of the things you bring up in your post were already addressed by me in posts, earlier in the day (e.g. regarding what we knew and when we knew it...etc.).
This was an unfortunate endeavor for Freehold Borough. More importantly, the real question is where do we go from here? I was not one to publicly or mistakenly gloat about "victory" in this case, but rather chose to point out the deficiencies in our legal system; called for a better local strategy to move us ahead; and offered some optimism for the future. Either side trying to snatch victory from the jaws of defeat came off as really silly. Only the attorneys won this one. It's better to focus everyone on the challenges that lie ahead rather than to fight over some picked over carcass for tidbits of success.
When we look at all the other towns, like Mamaroneck, ending on the same legal note as we did, we can clearly see that our defensive approach was in line with all the others. No, there is no comfort in not gaining a clear victory - but when no one else is winning, you have to wonder if there ever was the chance to begin with.
Rich, you are correct in saying that the impact of this thing will be determined in future Borough elections. This is the way it should be. This is the beauty of Democracy.

I'll bring it up. The Borough Web Site is not exactly to my utmost liking, but we've come along way since I first proposed having one, back in the mid 90's, and the late Joe Copeland turned to me, blankly, and asked, "Marc, what's a web site?" I'll never forget that one. Now, there's some real fodder for your earlier cry for term limits!!! I suppose we can consider the Borough web site a work in progress. Regularly maintaining a web site does take alot of work. I haven't checked, in a long while, but Eatontown and Colt's Neck once, both, had really extensive web sites...with committee meeting minutes, etc. Maybe even, overkill. We really don't have the staff to do that kind of labor intensive work...I wonder, though, if volunteers could be helpful? The short response to your suggestion is that I'll see if everyone agrees that we should add this information along with email addresses. Please realize that new committee appointments are made in January and their leaders are selected at their first meetings. It might make sense to wait until all is known and up to date. Marc

My gripe with the settlement was that the decision to vote was made the evening that the announcement was made -- foreclosing public debate -- and outcry -- about the settlement. That was either a calculated political decision, or the d**n best luck I ever heard of. Boy, that sounds vaguely familiar... I wonder if we go back a few posts, if anyone said anything similar to that... and was then attacked. Please, re-read the posts from page 3 onward and see who is holier than thou.

Maybe that's because your gripe was just a general cynicism of the settlement and how it "influenced" or "didn't influence" the election...
and Rich Kelsey's gripe was the timing of the settlement in ACCORDANCE WITH the community getting to debate it or not?
Two very different things.

Re-read it, F R.
By the way, where were you election night?

I'll answer this question when you tell me your real name and where you're from.
Otherwise, I do not give out any personal information, as trivial as it may be, to people I don't know.
