As I think about the Human Relations Committee and the person who is allegedly: (1) an illegal alien; (2) a member of Casa Freehold; and (3) non-resident of Freehold, I have been trying to think who is responsible for the appointment. I can think of 2 people responsible for the recommendation. Was it: (a) Jaye Simms, who is running for council, is the liaison to the Human Relations? I would think that as a relatively new member to the council, that he would not be so bold as to recommend such a controversial person. If anything he was acquiescent. (b) Kevin Kane, the former liaison to the Human Relations Committee and the current President of the Borough Council? My gut is to place the blame here. You may remember an article a little while back about the Latino festival. A little reading between the lines is interesting. Here is the link: newstranscript.gmnews.com/news/2007/0919/Front_Page/026.htmlHere is the reading between the lines: ... Advocates for the Latino community and municipal officials say an ongoing dialogue is helping to ease the tension that has existed between the two groups. ... Argote-Freyre said borough officials and Latino advocates have been meeting in small groups to work on issues affecting the immigrant community and longtime residents of Freehold Borough.
"After several years of turmoil we (borough officials and advocates) realized there was a need for an ongoing dialogue to talk about issues that affect both groups. ... Argote-Freyre said the meetings have been attended by Mayor Michael Wilson, Borough Council President Kevin Kane, Borough Attorney Kerry Higgins, Jayne Carr, the executive director of the Freehold Center Partnership, and Mike Page, a partnership member and owner of the Court Jester, to promote ongoing dialogues. ...
Wilson said he decided to open a dialogue with the Latino advocates after a demonstration took place at Borough Hall by people who were opposed to certain Rental Advisory Committee recommendations, specifically one that would have required people to reveal their legal or illegal status in the United States when renting housing.
In addition to Reynolds and Argote- Freyre, members of the Latino Festival Committee are Laz Cardenas, Suzanne Crandall, Ann Bagchi, Yeni M. Cardenas, Anna "Cuqui" Rivera, Juan Reyes, Janet Morales, Lidia Daniels, Gabriella Garnier, Diane Tennis, Virginia Taverna, Rose Ann McCrohan and Donna Buhl. Remember that Frank Freyre, a member of the HR Committee recommended a day laborer be a member of that committee. This recommendation goes back to early April this year: freeholdvoice.proboards46.com/index.cgi?board=humanrelation&action=display&thread=1175727102&page=1Legal residents of Freehold have been sold out.

If this gentleman is truly an illegal immigrant, the more important question is who will step up to have him removed from the committee?

no one will. We've all been told that this is a discretionary appointment and appointments cannot be revoked (for some unkown reason).
That is, at least, what we've been told and why FF is able to remain. on his committees.
So the question is, who are we going to hold accountable? I say, Kane and Simms.

Interestingly enough...I have it on rather good authority that the idea has been brought up to disban this committee due to a lack of any real impact on the town.
Considering this committee apparently doesn't do very much in the town, perhaps the best idea is to simply abolish it. That will solve the problem of who's on it for certain!!

It doesn't solve the problem of a mayor and council who may have chosen an illegal alien to be a part of it. What's next?
The silence on this issue is deafening. It has been alleged that Reyes is (1) an illegal alien; (2) a member of Casa Freehold; and (3) a non-resident.
None of these have been answered.
It is troubling that such a person may have been appointed.
It is troubling that the mayor chooses to address the spanish speaking population on a regular basis, but ignores the remainder of town.
It is troubling that the mayor has been having these meetings with the LLA, an outside interloper with no direct ties to this community apart from interloping in this community.

I am going to take a middle road here. Believe it or not, I do not have a problem with an illegal sitting on the HRC. We have to keep in mind what the HRC is for. There should be a variety of people sitting on the committee. Having someone to have a voice for the day laborer community is in itself not a bad thing.
Where I take issue is that this new dude is not living in our town and he is Casa Freehold. The Mayor made a very big mistake based on these two points. I find it hard to believe that we could not find a resident day laborer to fill that void.
It is also in bad taste to appoint Casa Freehold. They are a nothing group with very little support. A few months ago, even the APP bashed them. There is no value in having Casa Freehold on our committee. As it is, that committee is struggling to do some good. And make no mistake, most of them are good people who want to help. I will include Cecilia Reynolds in that latter opinion.
Just remember, next time Tom Baldwin sits at a meeting and bashes the council, as he does every month, they put one of him on a committee.

Illegal immigrants taxing Freehold
Plaudits for your July 17 editorial "Group's moxie knows no limits." The Casa Freehold group was successful in getting a well-intentioned religious community to give them a platform for making demands on a well-structured community of 10,000-plus legal residents.
At 81, I thought nothing could shock me. A group of lawbreakers making demands of legitimate government is something to be feared. They have no right to make demands of any kind. They crossed our southern border and are here illegally. Their demands are an insult to every U.S. citizen.
Thousands of illegals are overcrowding our public schools without contributing taxes for their support. They are living in overcrowded housing rented to them by unscrupulous landlords. There's an additional cost of law enforcement to enforce loitering laws throughout the community. Government at all levels has an obligation to start enforcing immigration laws.
W.J. Eugene Kelsey
FREEHOLD Brian, it's funny that you think an illegal immigrant can serve on a policy serving board, yet a non-borough resident can't. Sounds like the 23rd thing you need to believe in order to be a democrat.

The Asbury Park Press editorial Brian referenced. When you read this, know that the mayor and KANE AND SIMS appointed Reyes (member of Casa Freehold) to a Borough committee that sets policy... If you are not sitting down folks, please do so before reading... Group's moxie knows no limits July 18, 2007
A Freehold immigrants rights group's list of what should be included in any immigration reform bill has us wondering: Are they serious?
Among the "principles" suggested by members of Casa Freehold at a forum Sunday: unconditional amnesty and immediate legalization, an end to raids and deportation, and union benefits and workers' compensation for foreign workers that are equal to what citizens receive. We're surprised they didn't also demand a free McMansion, plasma TV and SUV for every illegal family.
What an absurd sense of entitlement.
They want to give a free pass and extend more benefits to people who broke the law to get here. That would give the green light to millions more to forgo green cards and worker visas, knowing that once they get two feet over the border, they are free to start making demands.
Illegal immigration is a serious problem. Unconditionally forgiving every person who broke the law getting into this country and loosening border security are not among the answers. Neither is any immigration bill that doesn't provide for secure borders, impose stiff penalties on employers who hire illegal immigrants, mandate the issuance of tamper-proof national identification cards and empower local police to enforce immigration laws.
An effective immigration reform bill must end the practice of granting automatic citizenship to children born here of non-citizen parents, make it illegal for states to issue driver's licenses to people who are unable to prove they have legal status, refuse school enrollment of children whose parents can't prove legal status and withhold social services other than emergency medical care from anyone not in this country legally.
Illegal immigrants should be allowed to return home and apply for readmission as guest workers, and a limited number of guest workers with a multi-year path to citizenship should be authorized.
The economic stress placed on our hospitals, social services and school districts because of unchecked illegal immigration is well-documented. What other country would stand by while swarms of people entered the country illegally, then held marches, demonstrations and press conferences demanding their rights? And held forums insisting that the laws on the books governing illegal immigration be ignored?
Turning a blind eye to the problem, as our federal government has done for years, only encourages such arrogance. It's time to put an end to it.

I understand your point and believe me, I would not jump up and down in favor of an illegal and maybe not now so soon after the law suit. But I again, refer to what the HRC is about. Our town. That is why I want to see people who live here on that committee. We do have illegals and if done right, having one on the committee, under the right context, could be a good thing. I am not sure our town is ready for it now, and whether we like it or not, they have to be engaged for some reasons such as safety, cultural assimilation, and obeying the laws they have not all ready broke trying to get here. I doubt a Casa Freehold person will be dealing with these things which is why he will only detract from that committee.

I have a very big problem with making an illegal immigrant a member of any committee, whether it can suggest public policy or not. Our Mayor and Town Council, by allowing an illegal immigrant to sit on this committee has given legitimacy to his illegal acts. I really can't believe that you see no fault in this! By saying what you have said, and again by the council and the Mayor allowing this to happen, you have fallen for the trick "well, they're already here, so we might as well try to get along with them and assimilate them into our town". NO!!! Become a citizen of the United States of America!!! Start paying taxes to help fund all the services you love to take advantage of!!! Start flying an American flag outside your home instead of a flag from some other country!!! THEN you can sit on a local committee, you can run for an elected position, you can do whatever you want...BUT NOT UNTIL YOU BECOME A CITIZEN OF OUR COUNTRY!!! This is the United States of America...people for generations have assimilated to the American way of life, my grandparents and great grandparents certainly did and I am willing to bet your's did as well. We do not have to assimilate to a group of people who swarm into our country and refuse even make an effort to become legalized citizens. I have to say, Brian...I am very disappointed in your statement.

I'd say A.) Most of you have already bashed gay people in one way or another. B.) Most of you have already and consistently bashed Democrats in one way or another. C.) This is an ALL- Freehold Boro Web site, NOT, and I repeat, NOT an ALL- Republican Web site. Until then, I think it's safe to say that the same handful of people are going to keep feeding their own interests and paranoia (which is a sign of clinical schizophrenia) and the site is just going to continue to devolve into nothing. I think the past couple of weeks' posts can attest to that. Steve

It is very normal for people to blame and lash out at the party in charge when they are not happy. See last years congressional election. The Repubs got theri clocks cleaned for good reason. I hate to tell you, but FB has a couple of problems. Should we blame the libertarians? C. This is still an all Freehold Borough web site. People make their own choice about posting, or not. No person has EVER been penalized by Rich or I for their view points. The amount of council bashing has absolutely gone through the roof. Those who support the council are very welcome here. Please, tell the nay sayers why they are wrong. Notice I did not get into your first point. And I will not. Anyway, welcome back, you are a good Freehold Voice.

Back to the subject matter at hand:
The last few weeks have shown that there has been an appointment that is seriously flawed and against the interests of this community.
While all council share the blame, some do more than others. Interestingly, the fingers are pointed at Kane, Sims and Wilson. All are up for re-election, but only one is unopposed.
There has been no chatter to deny the allegations, and nothing is out there to dispute it.
This is not partisan. This is something really more deep and more disconcerting. It's laughable to think that one party stands for appointing illegal aliens to committees and the other party is against it. Seeing Mr.PR's prior posts, I do not think that he would be in favor of this appointment.
So let's stay on topic on this thread. If you want to dwell onto non-related conspiracy theories, it would be better to post on another thread.

You and Rich have never penalized anyone for their viewpoints, huh?
1.) Zeus got banned 2.) Calliope had part of her post deleted because of one word. 3.) Casual Reader, as much as I disagreed with him, got banned. 4.) While I was never banned on MRPR, I have been bashed for being gay, being liberal-leaning and what have you.
However, then you have people on "the other side" like Cloris or Bergsteiger who have said nasty things and hateful things about others, especially gay people, and they go unpunished.
Explain that to me. In fact, you may not directly penalize certain people, but you ostrasize and shut them up in other ways. Also, I have never said I was a democrat, however, because I don't consider myself a Republican, you immediately call me a Democrat. Why is that? Are there only two separate political parties? Is the Republican world so Black and White about every single thing in this world?
This IS a Pro-Republican site. Deny it all you want but all I have seen the past few months is Pro-Republican, Anti-Democrat/Anti-Liberal/Anti-Gay/Anti-Minority.
Typical Republicans. Spoiled brats who whine until they get what they want. For the past eight years, we have been under the rule of President Bush's administration. Say what you will, but I definitely don't feel that Democrats are in power. However, I think that if Hillary is most likely going to win the next President election, that says enough of why people can't stand your party anymore.

My. point. proven. right. there. You have proven several points here -- none of them the ones you believe. Why all the anger and hostility? I thought you were the party of tolerance, intellect, and big ideas? Wow -- you have jumped right in here just throwing false allegation after false allegation. If I didn't know better, your reappearance after the machine choked off participation is related to a direct strategy to attack and deflect the current discussion. (Clinton War room policy 101) You reappearance now speaks true volumes. Anyway -- your views are welcome here. Notice we haven't deleted your posts! If you run afoul of the guidelines, that might be another story. You continually advocate for banning certain members based on their viewpoints, while arguing that we are evil for purportedly doing the same thing to people whose views you share? First, we don't ban people for having viewpoints that differ -- even if they are not backed by logic. The quality of the viewpoint is for the reader to decide. If people are banned -- which has not happened since registration -- it is for flagrant violations of the posting guidelines. We have explained this repeatedly -- and why you ignore it is probably more related to your agenda then any legitimate complaint. If you want to decry the GOP, Bush, Dogs with Short legs, Christian Conservatives, the Color green, or whatever -- have at it. Do it in the appropriate forum. Do it within the guidelines. That's all we ask. Right now a handful of posters are asking legitimate questions about a local issue during the election. The dem machine wants to convert that into a GOP cabal. Get serious. I have ripped the GOP here, and nationally on many issues. Many others here are not necessarily party insiders. They are asking questions about a group -- all dems -- who have had unfettered control of the Borough for decades. Does that make these folks GOP apologists? Get serious again. This site is not a "GOP" site. Recently, one issue that is associated with one wing of the GOP -- illegal immigration -- has gotten great play. This site is a site about Freehold, and it reflects the opinions of those who choose to participate. Those opinions change form day to day and issue to issue. You must be smart enough to understand that. So -- fire away. Keep within the rules, and state whatever opinions you feel you want associated with your name. How they are judged is up to the readers.

"Who appointed Reyes" was probably a bad question. The ordinance reveals the answer: 2.92.010 Created. There is created a committee to be know as the human relations advisory committee which shall consist of not less than seven nor more than fifteen (15) members to be appointed by the mayor with the advice and consent of the borough council. All members are to serve without compensation. To the greatest extent possible the ethnic composition of the committee shall be comparable to that of the borough. (prior code ยง 2-42.1) p.s. "The borough administrator and the mauyor shall serve as ex-officio members of the committee" Anyway, the Mayor is responsible for the appointment. The next in line is who recommended the appointment. I suspect the mayor and Kane are jointly responisble given their meetings with the LLA.
