Community Faith Briefs Posted by the Asbury Park Press on 02/10/07
The First Presbyterian Church of Freehold has begun 2007 with various activities designed to help its young members reach out to their community and grow in their faith.
The youth recently received an anonymous gift of $1,000, which was left on the front porch of the church pastors' home. The eighth- to 12th-grade students are planning how to utilize the money in order to best "reach out in Christ's name," according to a news release.
The church's youth group volunteered for the Sanctuary Program, which feeds Freehold's day laborers and other workers in need, on Jan. 27. The program runs through March 17.
"I am so glad to have the support of the youth from my church for this ministry," said Sandra Whitehill, coordinator for all volunteers for the Sanctuary Program and a member of First Presbyterian Church. "It is vital that they learn to put their faith into action and learn compassion for people less fortunate then them."
That weekend, the youth group also participated in the 30 Hour Famine program, which raises money for the hungry through World Vision, a Christian relief organization. The youth of First Presbyterian Church have been involved with the program since the early 1990s, the release stated.
This summer, youth group members will participate in a mission trip to western Pennsylvania; throughout the next several months, they will be preparing for the trip through various training experiences and by serving others.
