It would be nice to bring the web cam back to Freehold Borough...Here's the Story...
Once a live streaming video feed from Main Street in historic downtown Freehold, Freehold Cam has haulted the live broadcast due to lack of support from an organization claiming to help business in Freehold called Freehold Center Partnership.
It is our view that the management of Freehold Center Partnership lacks internet vision and is doing a dis-service to local business owners.
With this lack of internet vision, we beleive the current management does not have the ability to properly manage public funds or make effective business decisions that will benefit Freehold business owners online.
While the Live video is no longer active, Freehold Cam will be your Portal to Freehold. Already ranked in the top 5 listing with Google, Yahoo, Lycos, and others, it is easy to find, generates hundreds of visitors per day, and is powerful linking resource for any local Businesses, to learn about advertising, marketing, and partnership opportunities call 1-732-280-8069

I am not going to say anything here about FCP. But, I have to say that I hold my anonymity and privacy quite dear. I hate the idea of "cams" recording my every move, especially if I'm in public. I find it to be extremely violating and unnecessary. Occasionally, I deal with would-be photographers trying to sneak photos of me, and more recently, thanks to "technology," I've caught a couple of guys capturing my likeness on their cell phone cams. So, I'm glad the voyeur Freehold Cam is no more. [/quote If your using easy pass big brother is already recording your every movement and taking Pics too. How about a web cam on throckmorton to view the pickup trucks picking up workers and have IRS prove these workers are documented to be on the books?

And I thought Sybill of I would be the first to bring up the big brother angle! But, I do know what Marc is talking about. Some towns have the cams and you can veiw them online. Usually they are actually quite dull.

The Freehold Webcam site: www.freeholdcam.com/Here is Martell's tiki bar cam: www.tikibar.com/pages/webcam_tikibar.html. I agree with Brian, most webcams are rather dull. I've looked at them for most of the cities and countries that I've been to, you'll see some people on a beach, or a boat, or typical city traffic, but I don't know what the real entertainment value is except to make you long (or not long) to go back. Even a traffic cam is boring and limited. You'll probably want to listen to the news to get the extent of the traffic, not just one intersection. (Zoomable webcams and ones you can move are fun for a little while) A Freehold webcam, what are you supposed to see? Just some people walking on the street, some people hanging out, some cars passing. The cam would have to be strategically placed for changing events, but you would want it to promote the town and not show those elements that we are famous for. As to privacy, I'll save that boring speach for another day (you're welcome) You certainly can waste a lot of time figuring this all out though. www.camscape.com/QUESTION1: What webcams would you enjoy (worldwide)? QUESTION2: Where would a Freehold cam go?

Web cams are fun. People wanting to see an area for the first time, get an almost live feel for it. Others, fond of an area, can visit the cam from afar and be reminded of the place they love. I see that a camera on Marshall Street on the Syracuse University Campus has been moved. I used to visit that one all the time and it felt good to "be back on campus" at my desk. I still can visit the SyracuseCam on Clintion Square, in downtown Syracuse, though... www.syracuse.com/clintoncamI like to see the weather, night lighting, traffic, etc. I remember the Boro cam, which offered a gimpse of the Main Street, South Street intersection. Things like this are rarely a must have. It's a nice feature, not a absolute benefit. Marc

This is turning into an interesting little thread. I wonder if there are any good articles on the web about web cams (e.g. public interest/disinterest, business value, etc.)

I understand about cameras in certain places, such as convenience stores, banks, monitoring traffic -- all for safety and accountability, records of cirmes, security measures. Other than that, what's the point? I still think it's violating. Note to self: never leave the house in drab attire! There are Web cams used to "market" Locations to interest like Times Square, Web Cams, web Cams from the top of Mt. Hamilton that over looks San Jose, CA. (Great Sunsets), Nigeria Falls Web Cams (some what interesting at night with the Rainbow colours and the spray, ect... mthamilton.ucolick.org/hamcam/www.rntl.net/cams.htmwww.niagaraparks.com/webcam/webcam.phpwww.fallsview.com/Stream/HiResStill.shtmlwww.venice-venice.com/venice_hotels/venice_webcams.htmwww.earthcam.com/usa/newyork/timessquare/webcam.macomb.com/zoom.htmlwww.acsyellowpages.com/webcam.htmwww.wallawalla.com/Directory/Webcam.cfmwww.burlingtonfreepress.com/legacy/churchstreetcam.shtmlWhat concerns me is the prospective Downtown FB foot traffic, there are times when it may be unfaltering at times. so I question the value of a Downtown FB Web cam may serve. This may be the untold message by the former sponsors lack of renewed interest. Now if the New Trans. was to have the webcam posted on their site...... FIGFY

Upon further review, I now understand how unfortunate it is that Freehold is not using that site to it's advantage. There is some real potential for good advertising on that site.

There is some real potential for good advertising on that site. When it was still active, the Freehold cam was "down" most of the time and when it was working, it really wasn't interesting... If I want to see Mexicans hanging out on a street corner in the middle of the day or night, all I have to do is look out my window. Much better resolution, and I don't have to wait for it to refresh every 30 seconds. If you haven't already, check out the "virtual tour" of the downtown on the FCP site. Would that entice you to go out of your way to come to Freehold?

The sarcastic side of me wonders if the FCP shut it down because they thought the site of illegals hanging around was bad for business. On a more serious note, what caught my attention about the Freeholdcam site is that it also mentioned a bit about Freehold. That raised a couple of questions in my mind. Can the sponsor of the cam dictate the information, effectively advertising the town, and can the cam be centered on what the sponsor wants it to be on Again, the site could have potential in promoting the town. Considering the crappy press over recent years, getting some good things out would not be bad.

This is a fun little discussion. Whether we actually have the silly thing in town or not amounts to muc about nothing, but I REALLY put this topic out there to stimulate discussion regarding what the camera is actually pointing at.
What it all really comes down to is that if you are ashamed at what a web cam is showing the world about your town, then you have a lot to do to "improve the view." Hello, FCP....
Actually, if I were operating that web cam, I'd make arrangements with the Hepburn House B&B and place it on the building DIRECTLY facing OUR Battle of Monmouth Monument. Forget the downtown. Let's offer our most favorable view.
Online visitors would get a "Lexington-Concord" kind of view along with our quaintest homes, in the background. Then, we would have something important, historical and ATTRACTIVE to show, along with the local weather, lots of well dressed people walking to and from the court house, etc. This is where it belongs.

I did do some follow up on the issue of the cam. It costs five to ten thousand dollars to get it back up and running. I did not find out about how much it costs to keep it going.
The sponsor can dictate where the camera goes, as well as the advertising for the site.
That price is out of my range and is clearly intended for a business

And more follow up.
Now I know at least part of the reason why the cam went down. I took a bit more time and went to the FCP web site, which I have not been on in awhile. I did notice that they have more of the virtual tour of our town. They have a new interactive map that allows visitors to see various points of outside interest. I watched the Main street tour and it was quite nice. They filmed it when there was less traffic and people so the viewer could really see the buildings and decor. IMO, better then a live cam.
With that in mind, why would they want to pay for the live cam? And, what did the live cam really do for them or the town that the FCP is not already doing?
