Gazebo provides new venue for Main St. entertainment
FREEHOLD - One look around the borough easily reveals summer is here. Diners are relaxing outside the town's eateries, and Kruise Nite has returned on the last Thursday of the month.
Adding to the summer landscape this year is a new gazebo that has made its home in front of the Metropolitan Cafe on East Main Street. The structure, crafted by Mr. Fence, of Freehold, is attracting plenty of attention, according to Jayne Carr, the executive director of the Freehold Center Partnership.
The partnership, which oversees activities in the borough's downtown area, added the gazebo "to bring entertainment to outdoor diners. We're not looking for loud rock bands, but softer dinner music," Carr said.
Painters, mimes, small bands, duos or solo singers and musicians are also welcome at the gazebo, she said. Anyone who is interested in showcasing their talent may contact Carr at (732) 462-3584.
In addition to the gazebo, there will be new downtown banners, which will feature restaurant theme graphics. Individuals or businesses may sponsor a banner for one, two or three years. Large gateway banners are also on tap for this season. Carr said the banners will greet visitors and residents at every entrance to the downtown area.
Since smoking is no longer allowed in restaurants, the partnership and business owners have installed streamlined ash trays across the downtown area.
The partnership also has pocket parks sprinkled through town. Most of the pocket parks are already maintained by local landscapers. Carr is looking for two more landscapers to maintain a pair of parks.
Events planned by the partnership for the summer are free and open to the public. They include:
+ July 4 - Independence Day Celebration, 6 p.m. Freehold Raceway, Park Avenue, rides, games, music, food and fireworks.
+ July 13 - Full Count Big Band in concert, Monmouth County Hall of Records parking lot, 7:30 p.m.
+ July 20 - Saturday Nite Fever performs dance favorites, Hall of Records parking lot, 7:30 p.m.
+ Aug. 3 - The Del Vikings will sing their doo-wop hits, Hall of Records parking lot, 7:30 p.m.
+ Aug. 10 - The Cryers in concert with rock classics, Hall of Records parking lot, 7:30 p.m.
+ Aug. 17 - The Sensational Soul Cruisers perform R&B sounds, Hall of Records parking lot, 7:30 p.m.
+ Aug. 24 - The Party Dolls in concert, Hall of Records parking lot, 7:30 p.m.
