nt.gmnews.com/news/2011-08-17/Front_Page/Bicycle_pedestrian_plan_OKd.htmlThe idea to examine bicycle and pedestrian issues in the community was suggested by Councilman John Newman and the plan is the result of a study that was performed by the state Department of Transportation. Newman said he sought to make Freehold Borough’s streets safer and more accommodating for bicyclists and pedestrians. He said he was focusing on residents who regularly bike and walk in town, as well as for visitors to the community. The plan also included the creation of a brochure called “Bike Freehold, A Guide to Roadways and Historic Sites of Interest.” The brochure contains a map of the borough, the community’s historic sites and places of interest, and tips on riding bicycles in town. Newman said he is pleased the council accepted the plan. He said he has been notified by the DOT that grants for towns that have a bicycle plan in place are now available. He said he will meet with the borough administrator and borough engineer to determine what grants Freehold Borough may be able to pursue.
