(Unedited version)
In response to a letter to the editor “Writer Forgot One Detail” (News Transcript, July 20), Mayor Wilson appeared confused. The mayor wrote “the same old, same old, for the last 30 years - No new ideas just new faces.” He was referring to the Borough Republicans yet, that observation is actually reflective of the mayor's term in office and his surrounding Democratic Council. The same group that has driven the Borough to its current state of economic disrepair.
Mr. Alagna didn't mention that he serves as president of the Freehold Borough Republican Club in his letter because he wrote it from the standpoint of a concerned citizen about one specific decision made by the Council. It wasn't intended to politicize years of bad decisions by the Council or to play political games. It was the mayor who made this to be about the Democrats vs. Republicans.
As a matter of fact, the Republican Party is critical to the decisions made by the Borough Council. But, contrary to what the mayor wrote, we do have solutions for many of the issues that plague the Borough. As candidates for the upcoming Freehold Borough Council election, we will be running on a platform of fiscal responsibility, economic development and quality of life. Some of the initiatives within these areas, to name a few, are:
Match our current level of employees with our needs - thereby bringing our overall employment figures in line with those of other towns in the county and state.
Revise appropriations to necessary organizations - opting instead for a smaller budget with appropriations made on an as needed basis - thus, eliminate overspending.
Provide Downtown Freehold with some latitude to spearhead economic development and to properly implement the vision study.
Provide better police presence and stronger judicial support for our code enforcement and public safety.
Implement a more aggressive plan for improvements to our infrastructure.
This election will be about issues, facts and solutions. We welcome the opportunity to discuss all our initiatives in detail through a debate to be moderated by the League of Women Voters at a location mutually agreed upon in late October. Let the voters make informed decisions.
