Glenn Roberts as OIC Before the vote on the resolution was taken, Councilman John Newman offered some comments about the issue. Newman said he believes Roberts is “a good man” and said that he is serving the police department well. Newman said he believes Roberts should be named police chief now. He said having a police chief in place is a better alternative than having an OIC. “I understand it (Roberts serving as the OIC) is temporary, but why should we put it off?” Newman asked. Newman said does not believe an OIC has the same resources at his disposal that a police chief has. He said he had discussed drug activity in the borough with Roberts several months ago and learned that an OIC does not have access to resources such as setting up a stakeout or setting up a narcotics bureau to work these type of cases. “We need someone who can make real decisions,” the councilman said. “Let’s just make Capt. Roberts, Chief Roberts.”
