Residents and visitors will gather in Freehold Borough on May 30 to enjoy the 137th annual Memorial Day parade and to honor those individuals who have given their lives in service to the United States.......
The grand marshal of the 2011 parade will be John J. Maziekien Jr., 87, of Marlboro. Maziekien is a World War II veteran who served with the 3rd Marine Division in the South Pacific, in Guam and at Iwo Jima. Maziekien retired as a lieutenant with the New Jersey State Police following a 30-year career that began in 1947.
Memorial Day ceremonies will begin with a ceremony honoring Freehold’s war dead and America’s war dead. The 8:30 a.m. service will take place at Elks Point where Route 79 and Route 537 converge.........
The master of ceremonies for the service at Elks Point will be Marlboro Councilman Jeff Cantor, who is a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars. Cantor is lieutenant colonel in the U.S. Army who has been deployed to Afghanistan, among other places.
In honor of Memorial Day, several streets will be renamed for the day. McLean Street will be renamed Cpl. John A. Felton St., USMC; Hull Avenue will be renamed Cpl. Edmond M. Rohan Avenue, USAF; and Murray Street will be renamed Cpl. Philip A. Reynolds Drive.
students in the ROTC program at Colts Neck High School have been helping the Marine Corps League maintain the veterans memorial at Elks Point.
The parade will begin at 9:45 a.m. at Brinckerhoff Avenue and Main Street with a flag-draped casket accompanied by active military personnel from various branches of the armed forces.
We also are honored to have a flyover from Gerard Norkus, the owner of Norkus Enterprises, with one and maybe even two vintage aircraft this year that will go over the main route,
New to the parade this year is the Windsor Regiment Drum and Bugle Corps and Investors Savings Bank of Freehold, which will have a float carrying employees from throughout New Jersey.
Investors Savings Bank, East Main Street, has made a sizable donation to support the parade.
Also new this year is the Goddard School, Freehold Township, the Freehold Unicycle Club, and the Freehold Borough Arts Council.
Returning will be floats carrying Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts, the Freehold Little League, the Learning Experience in Freehold Township, the Monmouth County 4-H Club, the Freehold FFA (a national educational organization that prepares young people for leadership and careers in agriculture), and the Sand Hill Indians.
The Freehold High School band, the Freehold Township High School band, Pipes and Drums of Barnegat Bay, St. Peter’s Brass Band, Lincroft, the Asbury Park Marching Band and the Shore Brass Band are also expected to participate in the parade.
McCobb said she is still looking for World War II veterans to participate in the parade. AnyWorldWar II veteran who is interested in participating may call Alice Mc- Cobb at 732-462-4580.
