newstranscript.gmnews.com/news/2011-05-04/Letters/Look_harder_for_a_way_to_save_money.htmlLook Harder for A Way to save MoneyI t was quite disturbing to read the letter to the editor (“Councilman Should Make Specific Suggestions for Cuts,” News Transcript, April 27) co-written by Freehold Borough Mayor Mike Wilson and the five Democratic Borough Council members in response to Councilman John Newman’s recent guest column. The response, which was of an unnecessarily personal nature, failed to address the real issue of taxes being raised year after year after year with little regard being paid to taxpayers. It is difficult to argue that there does not exist at least 10 percent waste and redundancy of services in the borough that the mayor and council could address and institute cuts that would be far from draconian. My taxes have, since moving to Freehold Borough in 1994, risen over 300 percent. I do not think it is unfair to say that the quality or scope of services has failed to match that increase. No one wants to see layoffs or service cuts, but there are times that addressing the unfair burden being placed on property owners needs to be the No. 1 priority of our elected officials.
