Weather Update (5/18/2010): Due to inclement weather, the dedication of the Corporal Philip A. Reynolds Bridge will take place at 10 a.m. this morning as scheduled, but will be moved to the nearby Days Inn, 4089 Rt. 9 North, Freehold.
The 12th District Legislators are pleased to announce that the official dedication of the Route 9 overpass in Freehold Township in honor of Corporal Philip Reynolds will take place on Tuesday, May 18th at 10 a.m.
Reynolds, a native and lifelong resident of Freehold Borough, died Nov. 29, 1950 on a cold day during battle in Koto-ri when he was just 20-years-old. Under fire, he stood to cover a friend, but was killed while trying clear his jammed gun. The Marine was posthumously awarded the Silver Star and Purple Heart. The Marine Corps League Cpl. Philip A. Reynolds Detachment lobbied and raised money for the name change.
“This has been a four year journey,” said Assemblywoman Caroline Casagrande, “that is coming to an auspicious conclusion. I am so very pleased that this dedication is taking place, especially after the members of the Cpl. Philip A. Reynolds Detachment worked so hard to raise the money for this purpose. Cpl. Reynolds was a hero, and it is a privilege to have been involved in honoring him in this way.”
“I am proud to have been a part of the official renaming of this bridge for such a brave young soldier,” said Senator Jennifer Beck. “It is a testament to Cpl. Reynolds that not only has this local Marine Detachment taken his name for their own, but they also worked tirelessly to be able to memorialize him in this way. We have all worked so hard, and is it truly gratifying to see this sign finally being put in place.”
“As more and more soldiers return from overseas these days,” said Assemblyman O’Scanlon, “it is important that we do what we can to honor all of our veterans who have lost their lives fighting for our country. Cpl. Reynolds exemplifies the young soldier killed while trying to save a friend, and as we honor him, we honor all of those young men whose lives were cut short while serving our nation.”
The dedication will take place on the north side of Route 9, at the southern end of the bridge by the Days Inn Lodge in Freehold.
