Last week Freehold In Jersey had a very nice bit of good news....
freehold.injersey.com/2010/11/18/freehold-crime-down-in-2009/
In the past it has been well reported on this site, and accurate, that the borough had the third highest major crime rate in the county. ( some people have tried to debunk that by citing the overall crime rate, but the focus here has been on major crimes)
Unfortunately, my computer is on the fritz and cannot open the state files to do a better and updated comparison.
Either way, it is good to see this trend in our favor. I have to wonder why the change? Is the police department doing something that has been more effective? Or is this a natural trend?
One disturbing fact is the rise in bias crimes which went from 7 in one year to 17 the next. This also raises questions. Why the rise? Are people reporting things better? or is there a growing problem? a temporary bump? Who were the accusers? (race, religion or other group) and who were the accused?
I think the above is an area of concern because in my time here the people of this town have always got along pretty good, especially considering we have a light diversity in this town. I have never seen what could be called tension between the different groups and hope that does not change. I have always considered that to be a real positive and good reflection of the people in this town. Also, has the Human relations Committee been made aware?
Anyway, high crime in this town has always been one of the big negatives. This bit of good news is certainly very welcome and I am sure we all hope that this continues. Considering my area of town, which is usually very good, had a couple of nasty incidents over the past year, I really have an appreciation for this news.
