Last night a little after 8pm there was a lot of smoke and burnt plastic smells wafting to Broad Street from the south and I heard a number of Fire trucks. Does anyone know what was on fire?

At first I was told it was Silverts but I think that was wrong. I believe it was a house fire in that area.

There was a significant structure fire at a house on Elm St. around 7:15pm. The entire Freehold fire department was on it and nobody (except for a firefighter who suffered a broken finger) was hurt. The burning plastic smell you noticed was because the house was packed with tons of old furniture, electronics (VCRs, reel-to-reel projectors, audio receivers, etc.), and miscellaneous "collectibles". I suppose the election night coverage bumped it from last night's reporting, but it may end up on the APP site at some point later today. dfx PS. I guess nobody noticed my hint in last night's late-night posting that I missed the announcing of the election results and/or my complaint of reeking like smoke...

It turns out it was the Pink house between Silverts and Dolly's. Appernetly the resident knocked over a candle.

This may be an opportunity perhaps for "The Lantern" to do a short article on candle safety tips.

Dan, that is a good idea to have as a bullet point within. It certainly makes sense that if folks like to burn scented candles for ambience -- like I do -- to ensure the candles are nowhere near flammable objects or towers of stuff.

The ironic thing is that I've passed that house a million times and always wanted to take a peek inside since the owner claimed to sell antiques & hard-to-find items. Too bad the only time I had a chance to visit was right in the middle of a fire-sale!
hey-YOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!
(Thank you, I'll be here all week. Try the veal...)
