FREEHOLD — Fresh fruit and vegetables, colorful flowers and other locally produced goods are once again being sold in the Downtown Freehold farmers market.
The farmers market is held every Friday from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. now through October in front of the Monmouth County Hall of Records, Main Street, Freehold Borough.
Hauser Hill Farms of Old Bridge is selling apples, peaches, plums, nectarines, blackberries, blueberries and watermelon, plus squash, cucumbers, potatoes, corn, broccoli, peppers and eggplant. Later this season the farm will offer its pumpkins, mums, garlic and farmfresh eggs.
In 2009, fourth-generation farmer John Hauser’s harvests won him the honor of being named New Jersey Vegetable Grower of the Year by the Vegetable Growers Association.
To be chosen as the best in the state, Hauser had to meet four criteria — producing high quality vegetables; helping and promoting farming throughout the state; using innovative practices in vegetable growing; and giving back to the community, as well as being of good character.
Hauser is following in the footsteps of his father, grandfather and great-grandfather, all of whom toiled on the same soil for the past 150 years. Hauser Hill Farms, Ticetown Road, Old Bridge, consists of about 300 acres of family owned and rented land.
Also bringing produce to the farmers market is Dorothy Turner, who owns and operatesThe Farm at the corner of Wemrock and Gully roads in Freehold Township.
The Farm offers vegetables that include broccoli rabe, peas, arugula, stir fry greens, radishes, chard, basil, and other herbs, More standard items, such as peppers, eggplants, cucumbers and tomatoes, are also available.
Turner said she took over the family farm from her father, Frank Knauer, in 1982. The farm has been in the family since 1917. Turner, who is a fourth-generation farmer, said she grew up in the farming business.
“Our home is in Freehold and we love going to Freehold events and attending activities in town. The downtown farmers market is nearby and easy to bring our produce to,” Turner said. “It is also very nice to see people we know coming to the farmers market. We are very glad to participate and are really enjoying being a part of it.”
Kauffman Farms of Farmingdale is new to the farmers market this year. Farmers will bring all-organic fruits such as berries, peaches and melons to the market. Also available are eggplant, peppers, zucchini. corn and tomatoes. For those with a sweet tooth, freshly baked pies, breads, jams, jellies and honey will also be featured items.
Wemrock Orchards of Freehold Township will be selling corn, tomatoes, peaches and other seasonal fruits and vegetables, as well as homemade pies and other baked delights.
Each participating farm accepts WIC checks and senior vouchers.
New Jersey Natural Gas is sponsoring the farmers market.
“Holding our farmers market each year is a nod to the towns’s inception. Freehold Borough grew around the original Market Yard, where local farmers and craftsmen traded and sold their wares to residents in the region,” said Rich Gatto, CEO of Downtown Freehold. “In addition, as the ‘buy local’ mindset continues its groundswell, our participating farms are enjoying more customers who understand that locally produced food is healthier and that buying from local farmers is supporting their existence.”
