FREEHOLD — Often when tragedy strikes, especially when it occurs in a small community, people come together to help in any way they can.
To that end, the Freehold Borough PBA Local 159 in conjunction with the charitable fund of the legal firm of Lomurro, Davison, Eastman and Munoz, of Freehold Township, are seeking support for the surviving members of the Chen family who are grieving the loss of two family members and trying to recover from a tragedy.
Yao Chen, 39, and his sister, Yun Juan Chen, 28, were murdered in the early evening hours of June 16 at their home on South Street, Freehold Borough. The brother and sister shared the residence with other family members.
The Chens owned a small restaurant in the borough. The surviving family members, adults and children, have been left with not only an overwhelming sense of loss and grief, but also tremendous financial hardship, according to a press release from Lomurro, Davison, Eastman and Munoz.
The press release states that the family members are struggling to meet their daily needs while trying to carry on the family business that was their only livelihood.
Two men from New York, Dong Biao Lin, 24, and Zeng Liang Chen, 20, (no relation to the victims), were arrested in Freehold Borough shortly after the murders occurred. They have been charged with murder and other offenses.
The charitable fund established by the local law firm is a nonprofit 501(c)3 corporation committed to making a difference in the community by encouraging the contribution of financial and personal resources to assist those in need, according to the press release.
The fund invites residents of all towns to support the community and the surviving family members by making a donation to the charitable fund.
“The law firm has been doing community work for many years. About five years ago we set up the charitable arm of our firm for our attorneys and staff to give back to the community and to try to encourage others to partner with us in this effort,” said Christine D. Hardman-O’Neal, of the firm.
She thanked the Freehold Borough PBA for partnering with the firm to assist the Chen family.
