ALber C. Roux was tired of never having a place near the Jersey Shore where he could enjoy ballroom dancing in a great atmosphere. That was when he found the Knights of Columbus in Freehold and realized the potential it had for being a great ballroom dance place. Wednesday nights were open at the Knights of Columbus, so Roux jumped at the opportunity to do what he wanted. He started holding ballroom dancing. Lafitte Dance Club costs $12 at the door and there is a group lesson from 6:30 to 7:30.
I was able to ask him a few questions via e-mail about his dance club, here are his responses:
How long has this been going on in Freehold?
I have hosted that Wednesday dance in FREEHOLD for about 9
years.
Who is the dance instructor?
Our instructor is NOLA JONES, a former British ballroom champion. For more than 40 years before the passing of her husband they had ballroom studios. She is a fantastic & fun teacher.
How many people usually attend?
Between 40 & 70 dancers attend the weekly dance.
How old are the people that usually attend?
The ages vary from 16 ( we had quite a few students of the
Freehold high school ) to 80…
What is the atmosphere like?
The atmosphere is VERY friendly.
Do you need any experience?
No, you don’t need ANY experience as long as you want to learn
ballroom dancing & take NOLA’S one hour dance lesson (basic
steps).
The students from the high school, now in college, had NO
experience & now a few have joined the college ballroom group &
are doing very well. One Matt who attend RUTGERS U even teaches
part time at a local ballroom dance studio.
Do you teach any other kinds of dance?
Yes, during general dancing sometimes we teach some line
dances.
Does the same crowd usually come or do new people come each week?
We have regulars & not so regulars ( my list is about 250
dancers ), & I never know who’s coming. Also there is always a
few new faces, of course, that’s not every new commers who come
back, they had no idea what ballroom dancing was.
Just another Wednesday night… why not try something new and meet some new people? Ballroom dancing is a new and interesting activity you can try alone or as a couple!
