According to Freehold in New Jersey, Casa Freehold is holding a rally down town on Saturday, May 1st.
I will not make it to report observations, but if anyone else does, please feel free to post here. This site has certainly covered them enough in the past. There are great archives here pertaining to the past this group has with the town and residents.
Maybe Casa Freehold should join the police, teachers, firemen, and landlords at a council meeting! ;D

www.app.com/article/20100501/NEWS03/5010319/1285/LOCAL09/Protestors-in-Freehold-oppose-new-Arizona-lawJOSEPH SAPIA • FREEHOLD BUREAU • May 1, 2010 FREEHOLD — Rita Dentino said she does not want "my country to go back 100 years," beginning a rally Saturday morning protesting Arizona's new law allowing police officers to question people's citizenship. "We have made much progress, even though we have a lot of struggle," said Dentino, a Howell resident who is a leader in Casa Freehold, an immigrant rights group. "We don't want to go backward." The rally, attended by about 50 people in front of the Monmouth County Hall of Records, protested the Arizona law, which is set to go into effect at the end of July and will allow police officers to ask those they encounter about immigration status. The law is being modified to allow police to question only people detained in some way, rather than simply an encounter with police, which could be someone asking a police officer for directions, for example. However, immigration and civil rights activists view the law as an intrusion, specifically to the estimated 12 million undocumented immigrants. Speaking through an interpreter, Juan Reyes, a Mexico native who is undocumented, told the group he wants to see immigrants actively protest the Arizona law. Reyes, a Howell resident who is a leader in Casa Freehold, said immigrants are here to work, not be thieves. Frank Argote-Freyre, a borough resident active in Latino affairs, said, "Our message, here today, is very clear" — condemning the Arizona law, which he said treats people as criminals, making sure a similar law does not happen in New Jersey and reforming immigration laws that penalize otherwise law-abiding working immigrants. "We must continue to strive for comprehensive immigration reform," said Argote-Freyre, a leader in the county Latino Coalition and chair of the state's Commission on New Americans. "I'm sympathetic to the case for reform of immigration," said Ahmad Hussain, 55, a North Plainfield resident, explaining why he attended the rally. Hussain said his son-in-law is a Mexican national whose family brought him to the United States without documentation when he was 7 years old. Hussain said his son-in-law, now 25, is something of a victim of circumstances — his family brought him to America at a young age, but he cannot get his citizenship, apparently because he was undocumented, even though he had no choice in coming here. "He's living in shadows, he's fearful, he doesn't know what to do," Hussain said, adding his son-in-law is well-educated. "He could be a useful citizen. He is like stuck now." Dentino estimated about 40 from Freehold were headed after the local rally to a larger gathering in New York City for worker and immigrant rights, organized by the May 1st Coalition for Worker and Immigrant Rights. In various countries, May 1, or May Day, is recognized as International Workers Day. It, according to the May 1st Coalition, also has become a day recognizing undocumented immigrants' struggle. Is this the same Juan Reyes who was appointed by the Mayor to the Human relations committee in Freehold Borough? If Mr. Reyes is "undocumented," then he is not just a native of Mexico -- he should be a resident of Mexico. Now -- I know this board took a great deal of hits from the machine back when we questioned who Reyes was, and why he was appointed to the Human Relations Committee. But -- if the Asbury Park Press reporting is accurate -- why the hell did Mayor Wilson appoint an illegal alien to an advisory committee. Not only is he not a resident of the Borough, according to the reporting, he is not a resident of the United States of America. I will raise the issue again -- why is this Mayor and his people appointing illegal aliens to advisory committee positions in a town ripped to pieces and suffering under the scourge of an illegal foreign occupation? A couple of years ago, i an others raised the question about how the Borough checks the legal status of its appointees. Moreover, I made it clear that if he was knowingly appointed as an illegal alien, the Borough was in violation of Federal law, and possibly subject to federal criminal prosecution -- assuming they knowingly appointed an illegal alien to a Board. (8 USC 1324 makes it a federal crime punishable by 5 years in jail to knowingly encourage an illegal alien to enter or stay in the US. Making a political appointment certainly encourages an illegal to stay.) So -- we now go back an ask -- what did the Mayor know about Mr. Reyes's status, and when did he know it. Now that the Asbury Park Press has exposed Mr. Reyes as "undocumented," will the Mayor be removing Mr. Reyes from the committee?

I met Juan Reyes a couple of times and was very impressed. He is a gentleman with true grace and manners, and has a good heart. He's all about helping others, no matter what ethnicity you are. And that's the point of the HRC. If I had more time in my life, I would love to be on this committee.

Lisa, With all due respect, no matter of how great a man this gentlemen is, should the mayor be appointing, non residents and undocumented residents on top of that for a Boro committee? I dont see how this is possible? If this gentlemen is undocumented, then I believe we deserve an answer to why or how this took place?

And that's the point of the HRC. If I had more time in my life, I would love to be on this committee. Lisa: Mr. Reyes's personal charm in interactions with individuals is not the issue here. If you say he is a "gentleman" with "true grace and manners" that's fine by me. Those qualities are admirable in people. However, they are not the criteria by which a person gains lawful entry into the United States. Moreover, to illegally enter another person's country and then agitate for rights, protections, and benefits does not impress me -- particularly when he has jumped the line and cut other lawful would-be immigrants playing by the rules. Even that reality is not the issue here. The single issue is this -- if Mr. Reyes is an "undocumented" alien, why is he appointed to Governing advisory committee in the Borough of Freehold? What greater sign of the acceptance of illegal immigration and acquiescence to the agitators can there be than having the Governing body give its stamp of approval to illegal conduct? Moreover, and most seriously, what did the Borough governing body know of this man's status when they appointed, and reappointed him? Finally, and not inconsequentially, now that the APP has outed Mr. Reyes as an undocumented alien, will the Mayor ask for his resignation or remove him from the HRC? If not, why not? No one here is suggesting that the HRC not have a representative to the committee who can represent the views and concerns of legal immigrants, minorities, or other legitimate interests. I do think -- and maybe I am wrong -- that most of the law abiding, taxpaying residents of Freehold would reject the knowing appointment of an illegal alien to a government advisory committee.

I am going to write about this more in my next post, but the issue has never been about Juan himself. I have met him too, and found him to be a pleasant person. The issue is about a very questionable decision the Mayor made. More on that later. One thing about the APP article that struck me as weird. Juan used a translator to speak to the APP. When I spoke with him he appeared to have a reasonable grasp of the American language- English. To Mike, You bring up the point about out of town people sitting on our committees. We have discussed that on this site and it is a very worthy topic of concern. But, I have to urge caution for anybody viewing that. Remember, we do have several very talented people sitting on committees who do not live in the borough. t would stink to lose that talent, especially when not enough borough people are stepping up.

Rich, I do understand your point, clearly. I solely wanted to point out that I personally admire Mr. Reyes because he's a good soul. Really, for whatever that is worth.

Brian, Agreed, I dont want to see Freehold lose people that are hard working or dedicated to our committees. But as far as an undocumented person, thats a bit much!!! How can we tell people you shouldnt hire or rent to undocumented people if our officals think its ok to put them on committees? Im just alittle lost right now

Mike, just wondering why "we deserve an answer" -- for what purpose? To what end? I'm not sure why this is so important in the overall scheme of things.
Maybe I'm being a dumbass and if so, I can own up it!

And yes Lisa, "WE" do deserve to know, residents of Freehold should have the right and ability to receive answers from any elected offical. To me, it doesn't matter what party you are, whats right is right! MAybe im the dumb-ass but I cant see anyone justifying this?

Now , to get on track on the relevance of this topic and the direction it is going in. It is no surprise that Rich or any other long time participant would pickup on the Juan Reyes issue. The APP outing him as "undocumented" AKA illegal alien, jumped out at me too.
For the sake of newer readers, I feel a little background based in facts is very needed. Juan Reyes does sit on a municipal committee. This is related to a story that broke on this site and was a real hot topic for some time. There are several threads dedicated to the topic.
To try to be brief, back in March of 2007, out of town activists flooded our town hall. They were waving foreign flags, protesting comments made on this site by a then council person and they were protesting the rental recommendations.
Many people on this site and from town showed up at that meeting in solidarity for the town, mayor and council. Many were locked out due to overcrowding.
Those out of town activists has a list of demands. The Mayor capitulated and gave in to most of them, thus slapping all who supported him in the face.
One of those demands was the appointment of a day laborer to a committee. That appointee was to replace another activist who was not being reappointed due to his own bad behavior. The site participants here rightfully questioned this and had legitimate concerns and questions. While it is not expected the Mayor would come to this site to answer these questions that people had, this issue did make its way into the paper. The Mayor was questioned by the News Transcript and did not answer the questions. Some of us now proudly wear the malcontent label because of this. To this day, the mayor has never answered these questions from the people he is supposed to serve.
At the time this story broke, there were questions of the legal status of Juan Reyes. I cannot prove it, but do believe the council knew he was an illegal alien. That in itself was never a big concern of mine, but several site participants were concerned about an illegal alien sitting on one of our committees. For those who were concerned, the APP has indeed confirmed your suspicions.
For me, the big question was, why did the mayor appoint an activist from a radical out of town group under conditions of duress? Some of us believe that is not the way to bring anybody to the table.
To date, no elected official in Freehold Borough has had the courage and decency to come forward with an answer.
Now, for my bigger point of why this issue jumped out at me.
This site and its participants were proven right-again- because of those pesky facts that some do not like. By comparison, the detractors of this site have, again, had their own credibility decimated.
To be clear, Juan was never the issue and the HRC was never a target of the site participants. All questions were directed at the Mayor.
What we have learned. Elected leaders answer to out of town activists, but not residents.
Casa Freehold can get an appointment to a committee, but not Ted Miller who has tried. At least we now have our priorities straight.
AS an after thought from those years ago, with all the bad press that this town received from the appointment and the fact that good people were degraded for asking simple questions, it is fair to ask a question. What good has an out of town activist had on our committee and was it worth it?

Mike, maybe it's just me, but I really don't care if someone is an illegal alien or not so that is why this is a non-issue to me personally. Again, that's just me.

Lisa,
Like I said, I mean none of this to you in a disrespectful way, just simple debate!
I just dont understand this, and maybe I'm wrong....If a person, regardless of what country they are citizens of, illegally comes into another country, isnt that breaking the law? We have proper channels to follow to allow any human being to legally become citizens of America, thats what makes this country as wonderful as it is. If this gentlemen followed the proper channels, then I applaud the Mayor for considering him and appointing him to a committee. If this gentlemen, broke laws to gain access to America, cant we see thats wrong. If he is undocumented, isn't the mayors appointment, not legitimate? I like the mayor and support him but this makes no sense.
Also, I would like to say, people like myself or Rich Kelsey, who ask questions, can not and should not be made out to be racist or anti-immigration. I can't speak for Rich, but my entire family came to America, through the proper channels and were immigrants, I support 100% people coming to America for "the dream", if its done properly! (not directed towards anyone, just a general statement)

Mike, I know you mean no disrespect and I clearly understand yours/Rich's questions. I cannot contribute anything of intelligence or value about the immigration debate nationally or locally. I just don't want to see any decent human hurt; that's all. Over and out!

Lisa, your views are good to have here. Like you, I did not take issue with the lawful status of Juan. I know many disagreed with us, which is cool. I think a legal immigrant would have been better, but for me the bigger issue was his associations. Those radical groups have never done anything good for this town. In context, that appointment was to the Human relations Committee. The name says it all. It is not called the "legal resident relations committee." That committee is supposed to represent the entire population of this town. No matter what happens with illegal immigration in this nation, we will have a population to deal with locally in a civil and humane way. The problem is, I do not see anybody doing that. The funny thing is, when I sat briefly on the HRC, they were burned out on the topic of the illegal immigrants in this town.

Since I'm already on a roll...I might as well put in my two cents about this article as well...
The first question I have is, has ICE shown up at Mr. Reyes door to take him into custody? According to the article (as it has been mentioned in the other posts) he is an undocumented person living in Howell. Forget the fact that he's on a town committee (again, that's no surprise, our town officials have been capitulating to the illegal immigrant groups for years), I want to know when the authorities will be escorting him back to good old Mexico?
As for Rita Dentino's quote about how she doesn't want her country to go back 100 years, I am dying to know what she meant by that. Did she mean she doesn't want to go back to a time when immigrants had to come into this country legally and go through a process to become a tax paying American citizen? Is that what she doesn't want to go "back" to??? Maybe she doesn't want to go back to a time when immigrants who came to this country felt an obligation to assimilate to the culture around them rather than force the culture around them to assimilate to them?? It was about 100 years ago that a great man said this...
"In the first place, we should insist that if the immigrant who comes here in good faith becomes an American and assimilates himself to us, he shall be treated on an exact equality with everyone else, for it is an outrage to discriminate against any such man because of creed, or birthplace, or origin. But this is predicated upon the person's becoming in every facet an American, and nothing but an American...There can be no divided allegiance here. Any man who says he is an American, but something else also, isn't an American at all. We have room for but one flag, the American flag... We have room for but one language here, and that is the English language.. And we have room for but one sole loyalty and that is a loyalty to the American people."
I guess that's the type of thinking Ms. Dentino does not want our country to revert to. The more I see, hear, and read about this woman, the more certain I am in my opinion that she is living in her own little fantasy land. Maybe she comes to Freehold not to help the illegal immigrants, but to make sure they stay in Freehold and don't wander into her neck of the woods (Howell).
Next...onto my other favorite "holier than thou", spotlight seeking illegal immigrant supporter Mr. Freyre. "...condemning the Arizona law, which he said treats people as criminals..." Hey Frank...if they entered the country illegally, are living and working here illegally...THEY ARE CRIMINALS. "...and reforming immigration laws that penalize otherwise law-abiding working immigrants." What laws would those be, Frank? What laws penalize "law-abiding working immigrants"? Or are you referring to laws that penalize working illegal immigrants? Yeah...there's that pesky word again that Frank and Rita, and Juan and all of the other wonderful souls, keep leaving out of the conversation...illegal. "We must continue to strive for comprehensive immigration reform," ...translation..."We are not going to rest until the illegal Hispanic immigrants in this country (because quite frankly, we don't care about any other nationality of illegal immigrants) are simply made legal without going through the normal process and without having to pay a dime in fees or fines or back taxes owed." Glad we got that clear.
When, dear god, are we going to wake the heck up? When is a reporter like this Joseph Sapia going to look at someone like Frank or Rita and say, "don't you mean 'illegal' immigrants?" or "What was it about this country 100 years ago that you don't want to go back to?" When is a reporter going to ask one of these people the hard questions and call them out on their BS instead of just sitting there and writing down every word they say as if it were already accepted as absolute truth??!!
I can not even begin to describe how absolutely disgusted I am with the illegal immigrant supporters who continue to spew their lies and demand that everyone simply accept them as truth. Or how I want to vomit when I read an article like the one below which doesn't dare take even the slightest chance of getting an opposing view.
For a long time, I have shrugged off the people who have said that this problem is going to end in violence...but I can't anymore. There have been many who have been saying "there's a war coming" in some form or another...and sadly, I am finally starting to agree with them. Do I want to see it devolve to that? Absolutely, positively NOT. I prefer open, honest debate which leads to concrete results based on facts...but we just can't seem to get that nowadays with this or any issue. And when the violence does come, I will hold personally responsible our elected politicians (still not calling them leaders) who sat on their a$$es for years and did nothing.

I would love open and honest answers, especially in light of the fact that the issue as reported on this site has been dead on every step of the way. I am very surprised the news papers haven't picked up on this. I was thinking seriously about going to a council meeting and bringing this up. I still might. But, I have seen too many times where people do not get public answers at council meetings. Back when this issue was touched upon in the news transcript, that would have been the time for the governing body to give open and honest answers. The fact that it never happened tells me that they did indeed make a decision that they are not willing to back up. I wonder, if these questions are brought up in a more public arena, can we finally get open and honest answers? Has the councils stance on this appointment changed since it was revealed that the appointee is an illegal alien? Why are people in this town so darn afraid of open and honest discussions? The answers don't even have to be ones that other agree with or like. Just decent, honest, open and civil. Is that so hard? I am really thinking it is time to start making noise on this.......

Sometime great public questions can lead to great public discussion. Perhaps one of the papers charged with tracking real news will follow-up on a public discussion started at such a meeting. Heck -- I might have to attend.

AS far as the papers, I do not completely trust them. They really are missing a good story here when all facts are compiled. I recall the first time when this did get in the NT Clare was interviewing me and did not want to touch the legal status of Juan. These issues do need to go to the people.
