On Saturday, June 19th, 2010 from 2:00 PM to 7:00 PM, the Court Street School Education Community Center will host its 1st "Juneteenth Celebration". "Juneteenth is the oldest known celebration commemorating the ending of slavery in the United States. Dating back to 1865, it was on June 19th that the Union soldiers landed at Galveston, Texas with news that the war had ended and that the enslaved were now free.
2 1/2 years after President Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation, which had become official January 1, 1863. Juneteenth celebrates African American freedom while encouraging education, self improvement, self-development and respect for all cultures. Usually celebrated with barbeque's, festivals, and other entertainment.... We are planning an afternoon of fun filled family oriented activities and entertainment.
