newstranscript.gmnews.com/news/2010-04-14/Front_Page/Youngster_raising_funds_for_United_Kingdom_trip.htmlYoungster raising funds for United Kingdom trip BY CLARE MARIE CELANO Staff Writer FREEHOLD — If youngsters can bridge the gap between cultures, learn and become aware of other people’s cultures and behaviors, maybe there would be a better chance to avoid conflict. Kyle Cannon, 12, of Freehold Borough, hopes to have a chance to put that theory into practice by traveling to the United Kingdom and Ireland in July as part of the People to People ambassador program. When asked why he wanted to join the program, Kyle said, “I would like to learn about other cultures and about other countries. Sometimes, people think bad things about Americans. It will be my job to tell them the truth about Americans.” Kyle said that when he gets home he will tell people about the places he has visited. The People to People ambassador program was put in to place more than 50 years ago. It offers “extraordinary life-changing educational travel for students, athletes, educators and professionals,” according to the organization’s Internet website. According to Kyle’s mom, Lynn, President Dwight Eisenhower put the program in place on the premise that if children at a young age started to learn about another person’s culture and the political climate of their nation, the prospect of conflict might be eliminated. Since being accepted into the program, Kyle has worked hard to raise the $6,700 he needs for the 19-day adventure. On April 23 from 5-8 p.m., Kyle will host a fundraising spaghetti dinner at the Elks Lodge, East Main Street, Freehold Borough. The dinner will include salad, bread, spaghetti, meatballs, sausage, desert, beverage and coffee. Tickets are $8 for adults, $5 for children, and $5 for any first responder (police, firefighters and first aid squad members) in Freehold Borough. “Our first responders do so much, especially during all the snow, blizzards, storms and power outages we had. Kyle wanted to give them a break on the tickets for the dinner. He wants to be able to give back a little to those who do so much for us,” Lynn said. This will be the first trip with People to People for Kyle, who attends St. Rose of Lima School. He said he is hoping for a good turnout for the spaghetti dinner. “Without a good turnout I may not have enough money and I may not be able to go on the trip,” he said. For tickets, call 732-431-4679. Tickets will also be sold at the door on April 23.
