Historical Preservation Commission Seeks Nominees for 2010 Awards
FREEHOLD - The Freehold Historical Preservation Commission has announced it is now accepting nominations for two awards to be presented during Freehold Borough's seventh annual Restoration and Preservation Awards event scheduled to be held in May.
The Preservationist Award is presented to a Freehold Borough house or structure that has consistently and accurately been preserved throughout the years and has always maintained a high level of historical accuracy and integrity. The award reflects the structure's continuum, through successive occupancies and the respectful changes and alterations that have been made.
The Restoration Award honors a Freehold Borough house or structure that has recently been restored to its most significant time in its history with historical integrity and accuracy.
David Loring, Freehold Borough Historical Preservation Commission chairman, asserted that nomination criteria do not include routine maintenance, such as painting or re-roofing.
“The two awards look to shine a positive light on those Freehold Borough homes, buildings and structures that are unique and important in their historical status,” he describes.
Councilman John F. Newman, liaison to the Historical Preservation Commission, said, “These two awards symbolize and reflect the distinction of Freehold Borough among any other town in Western Monmouth County. The Commission, comprised of experts, is also confident that the annual awards will impart a sense of pride and responsibility among owners of historic properties to maintain the unique patina of Freehold Borough.”
In order to nominate a house or structure, individuals can send a nomination with their name and address; the address of the chosen structure; whether the structure is being nominated for "restoration" or "preservation" and a brief explanation why the structure is being nominated.
All nominations can be e-mailed to FreeholdHistorical@hotmail.com or sent via regular mail to the Freehold Historical Preservation Commission, 106 Broad Street , Freehold 07728. Nominations must be received by April 20.
Members of the Freehold Historical Preservation Commission will vote on the applications and the award will then be announced sometime in May with award winners scheduled to receive special plaques that can be hung outside their front doors. The plaques will be presented to the winners by Mayor Michael Wilson at a Borough Council meeting.
“The award program is part of the Historical Preservation Commission’s mission to recognize the efforts of those who preserve our heritage and contribute to the borough’s historic stature, Loring commented. “The commission is also very excited to give the public the opportunity to participate in the awards process by nominating restored and preserved homes.”
