HOWELL — A Freehold man died early Sunday morning after the vehicle he was a passenger in collided with another car in the northbound lanes of Route 9 near West Farms Roads.
Tyshon Thorpe, 23, died after the 2001 Hyundai Elantra driven by a 17-year-old juvenile was struck on the passenger side door by a 2009 BMW 328 driven by Jodi Santangelo, 46, of Howell.
The crash occurred about 12:30 a.m. Sunday, as the juvenile, whose name is being withheld by police because of his age, was crossing Route 9 from West Farms Road and was struck by Santangelo's vehicle, traveling in the northbound lanes of Route 9.
Thorpe suffered severe internal injuries and was transported by Howell First Aid to CentraState Medical Center, Freehold Township, where he was pronounced dead about an hour after the crash was reported, according to Howell police.
The 17-year-old driver, who suffered a severe head injury, was transported by helicopter to Jersey Shore University Medical Center, Neptune, where he was listed in serious condition.
Santangelo and her two teenage sons were taken to Jersey Shore University Medical Center with minor injuries.
Investigators had not had an opportunity to interview the juvenile about the accident, and no citations or charges were lodged Tuesday against anyone involved.
Howell police are asking anyone who may have witnessed the crash to call them at 732-938-4111. Traffic Safety Officers Scott Brooks and Riaz Motani are investigating.
