newstranscript.gmnews.com/news/2010-03-24/Letters/Resident_pleased_official_has_been_named_to_horse_.htmlResident pleased official has been named to horse panel Iwas pleased to recently learn that Freehold Borough’s newest councilman, John F. Newman, was appointed to Monmouth County’s Save the Horse Committee. This committee is devoted to protecting the two Monmouth County racetracks (Freehold Raceway and Monmouth Park). Freehold Borough Mayor Michael Wilson also recently expressed how important Freehold Raceway is to Freehold Borough as a ratable. Mr. Newman has taken the proactive step to pursue a county committee appointment in addition to his duties as a Freehold Borough councilman in order to help protect this asset. The racetrack is not only important to Freehold as a large ratable, but it is also important to western Monmouth County in terms of jobs and open space. The horse industry is a deep-rooted part of life in Monmouth County and the quality of life would not be the same without it. Ed Scarfi Freehold Borough

John's first "good job" letter! It will probably be a matter of time before he gets a "bad boy" letter. Maybe I will write it. lol
Kidding aside, it is good that we have a voice on that committee. It is also good, as the letter states, that the mayor and others are paying attention to this issue.

To me, this is a very important issue and committee to be on. Its nice to see John wanted to be appointed and got it, I'm sure he will do an amazing job. Glad to see Mr Newman is working so hard, he is proving his critics, myself included, wrong so far!

I am very happy for Councilman Newman and mean no disrespect whatsoever when I wonder why Freehold Borough long-termers such as the Mayor and Councilwoman Shutzer, Councilmen Kane and DeBenedetto who have been involved in the borough’s leadership for years and who have knowledge of the entire issue not been chosen to participate on this committee?
I remember at the Reorg the mayor said something about having a meeting with a higher-up politician, can't remember who, about slots at the track to keep it going.
I love the one-arm bandit machines and hope they do get them there.

During the summer months I wounder what the trun out would be if this race track was able to be used for an out door summer concert series..l like the PNC art center or Nikon Theater on LI.., some what of a smaller scale but..... I see some posibilities..., and I know western monmouth as well as southeastern middelsex county population would be able to support such events... Currently at night the ractrack is has become a BIG OTB establishment, I wonder if it could some how support a mixed use like this. Just a though

...snip ... I wonder why Freehold Borough long-termers such as the Mayor and Councilwoman Shutzer, Councilmen Kane and DeBenedetto who have been involved in the borough’s leadership for years and who have knowledge of the entire issue not been chosen to participate on this committee? Maybe you answered your question? It could be a number of things. First, it may be that they did not have the fire in their belly to add the responsibility. (Long time service can bring experience, but it can also dampen enthusiasm.) Some also serve with and on other boards, of course. Second, it could be that people are looking for new and fresh perspectives for the issue given that sometimes folks long involved hold hardened views on issues or people. Third, it could just be that Mr. Newman asked and the others did not. Fourth, it could be that in an act of bi-partisanship, the entire council thought it great to allow someone with a fresh perspective to serve giving new energy and a new set of ideas to the problem. -- I am sure this is the case. :-) Seriously, maybe we will get some insight on the selection process. Obviously, the most important fact here is not who serves, but how well they serve. I think all the posters here seem to agree that Mr. Newman brings great effort and vitality to his position since his election. Hopefully, his colleagues will impart useful wisdom and knowledge to him to facilitate his service.

Johns passion and enthusiasm seems to be noticed and very well recieved in town(just what I hear)! Hats off to you Mr Newman!

PS: My initial post was simply wondering from an ignorant standpoint. I mean nothing at all against CouncilNewman. He knows I admire him. He will do a great job alongside the others and accomplish really good things.

No, no sarcasm there, Rich!
Usually when I ask questions, I really like getting well thought-out answers. I appreciate insight!
