Thanks for posting this, it does belong here. I can only hope that these cuts will force some real change in Trenton that will reduce the massive and oppressive costs of public education. It has become an unsustainable behemoth. For starters, we need to see unfunded mandates eased, unions and public employees seriously challenged, a better more fair way to fund the schools, and the abolishing of the Abbot system.
It is also time to leave the rich folks alone. I still say double tax the poor, politicians and unions- they costs us the most and too often give back the least.

Brian!
Double-tax the poor? That's evil!
Meanwhile, I do give Gov. Christie tremendous credit for his conviction. He's trying to craft a plan that tries to ease the State out of near bankruptcy and ruin. Oh yeah, things are going to suck almighty ass for quite a lot of people, but there's no other choice when it comes to the future of the state.
I look at it this way: when you're sick or injured, or going through post-op rehab, you still have to go through periods of pain and/or agony before you get well again. Pain is a partner to the healing.

Brian, Does this mean the Boro can expect a check from you for double your current property tax because you are a union member? There is nothing stopping you from doing that voluntarily. Does this mean Fiber should pay double?

T I still say double tax the poor.., I just noticed this Jeff..., Brian, what the h*ll doe this comment mean, we need to.., nope..., we MUST empower the poor to pull themselves up by the boot straps, and lift them from poverty into being productive and living in (relative) prosperity!!! About the Abbotts, I say, a full and complete audits, any district not willing to comply, will lose funding and be considered for some level of privatizing. as we all know, spending $27,000 on each student, and after 20 years, still having a record of failure IS CRIMINAL!!! Abbott districts paying Admins upward of $200K per year, with the well publicized (lack of) results we all read about, is a sham, a shame. a fleecing of the taxpayers and a horrific abuse of the public trust! Give us the money, and we will be accountable, with a highly productive public school system! Once again, this state must develop a new comprehensive school funding formula, as well as create an environment were private schooling and public schooling will competition. Look at any other industry, without strong completion..., product quality suffers.

It is also time to leave the rich folks alone. I still say double tax the poor, politicians and unions- they costs us the most and too often give back the least. Brian, Does this mean the Boro can expect a check from you for double your current property tax because you are a union member? There is nothing stopping you from doing that voluntarily. Does this mean Fiber should pay double? Ouch! I was waiting for someone to come back with that zinger. Actually, I wasn't thinking so much about doubling property taxes on those groups, but income tax. That is always a favorite tax when we see the class warfare against the rich. The class warfare system we have has got to end. The wealthy and much of the middle class pay far more than their fair share. You may be on to something about the property taxes. That might just get people to pay better attention. I singled out those groups because they do cost us a lot and often with little regard to how much they cost us. There is not such thing as a free service. We all wind up paying dearly for way too much that must be questioned. We have politicians in Trenton who love to show how much they care about education. So what do they do? They pass a mandate that costs a bundle to show how much they care. We pay a lot for each and every mandate. Many union people do no make very much money. Often their raises are just a COLA. But, they still cost a lot in the public sector. When health care goes up 10, 15, 20, percent or more, the tax payers pick up that tab. That kind of increase is unsustainable! What did the union leadership do to stop this? NOTHING! They have no reason to cry about the cuts and changes that must be done when they did not help to begin with. The poor do pay very little in taxes and quite often receive quite a bit in public service. Again, there is no such thing as free. The entitlement mentality, from many different people, has got to come to an end. The above are just examples meant to challenge thinking and the way business is done in NJ. AS for me and my position? I could not afford double property tax, but I do recognize and accept that there will be a need for public employees to have their retirement age increased and pay more to their health benefits. I view those things as inevitable and accept them.
