Harlan Tuckerman FREEHOLD — Center Players, Downtown Freehold’s resident theater company, will present a revival of “Uncle Philip’s Coat” by Matty Selman, and directed by Bernice Garfield-Szita.
Having opened to rave reviews from The New York Times, the play had a successful run off-Broadway in the late 1990s. Harlan Tuckman, who has a long history in New York and regional theater, will perform this one-man show in Freehold.
“Uncle Philip’s Coat” will open at Center Playhouse on Jan. 23 with a meet-theauthor reception and run though Jan. 31.
The story of “Uncle Philip’s Coat” has broad universal appeal for people of all ages and ethnicities as it touches their hearts, evokes family memories and makes them laugh and cry at the same time.
“Audiences, no matter what their family origin is, will relate to the themes sensitively spotlighted in this play. Whether we are first generation or 10th, someone in our history left their familiar home in search of a better life in America. We are all connected and ‘Uncle Philip’s Coat’ helps us realize this,” Garfield-Szita said.
“Uncle Philip’s Coat” is a tale that spans continents and generations. It begins in old Russia and with humor and pathos it takes the audience through Ellis Island and into the challenges of life and relationships in a new land.
The catalyst for the story is a worn Old World coat with a fur collar and trailing lining. Most importantly, the coat carries the rich memories of this family’s journey and is symbolic of survival and uncelebrated excellence.
Tuckman, who was most recently on tour with “Friends,” his two-person comedy that played throughout New Jersey and Florida, portrays Larry, the dreamer, his father Mickey, Uncle Philip and a myriad of lesser characters.
Tuckman is only the second actor to perform this play, having premiered at Greenbriar-Wittingham, an adult community in Monroe Township.
“Uncle Philip’s Coat” will open in Freehold Borough on Jan. 23 as a fundraising event for Center Players, featuring hors d’oeuvres from Russian and European cuisine, an opportunity to meet Selman, the author of the play, and a discussion following the performance with him, Tuckman and Garfield-Szita.
Performances for Uncle Philip’s Coat are as follows: Saturdays (8 p.m.): Jan. 23 30; Sundays (2 p.m.): Jan. 24 & 31.
All tickets for the opening night fundraiser/reception are $50. Tickets for the remaining performances are $24 for adults and $22 for seniors, students and groups of 10 or more. Regular performances include complimentary beverages and desert.
