Have you ever been inspired by a story of great courage or compassion and wondered how you might use your own gifts to make the world a better place? This year, you can give a holiday present that really counts—the gift of life.
Michael suffers from end-stage kidney disease and a living donor transplant is considered the optimal form of treatment. Several of his willing family members and friends were tested, but were heartbroken to find out that they were either incompatible or had health concerns that prevented them from being living donors. Living donors make a big difference in many ways, but most importantly, their recipients avoid spending years on dialysis waiting for the possibility of a deceased-donor transplant.
Interested individuals begin by filling out a very short screening questionnaire and a blood test is performed to determine whether the person is a suitable match. Thorough testing follows to ensure that the donor is healthy and can safely proceed. The surgery is usually performed laparoscopically, so it is minimally invasive, which makes the donor’s recovery quicker and easier than it would be with an ‘open’ procedure.
All costs of testing and surgery are paid by the recipient’s insurance.
We are each born with 2 kidneys, but people live normal, healthy lives with 1 kidney... so, if you are blessed with good health and want to consider a very special gift this holiday season, please share your spare!
