Commission seeks ghost stories
FREEHOLD — The borough Historic Preservation Commission is looking for a few good ghost stories.
Commission Chairman Dave Loring said the commission is tentatively planning a major event for the Halloween season of 2010, highlighting the variety of ghost tales and strange events that have reportedly occurred in the borough over the past century.
"There have been reports of ghosts at some houses, some fascinating stories focusing on the cemetery on Barkalow Avenue and its residents, and other out-of-this-world stories," Loring said. "Whether there is verification of the truth in them isn't the important part so much as the stories are fascinating, depict an intriguing side of the history of the borough, and are of great interest not only to the residents, but to visitors as well."
At the same time, commission members are conducting their own research and submitting their own stories of sightings, murders, hangings, and other eerie events in the area over the centuries.
Once information is gathered and verified by other sources, the commission will determine the most interesting way to make it known through a significant event or celebration around Halloween of next year, according to a press release.
Individuals with information, photographs, newspaper clippings or other memorabilia surrounding the true stories of murders, hangings or legends about ghosts or spiritual interventions are invited to email their information to Loring at dloring@comcast.net or mail information to the commission at Borough Hall, Main Street, Freehold, NJ 07728.
