freehold.injersey.com/2009/07/23/court-st-school-needs-volunteers-funds/When Andrea McPherson walks into the former Court Street School, she sees potential. "I see so much that can happen here," says McPherson, vice-president of the board responsible for caring for the building, now known as the Court Street School Education Community Center. But what McPherson doesn't see, she says, are the funds or the volunteers necessary to make her vision a reality. The Court Street School was an all-black school until 1948, when the state banned segregated schools. The school re-opened as an integrated school for kindergarten through third graders in 1949. It closed for good in 1974, according to information provided by McPherson and the Monmouth County Historical Association. The building has since been converted into a community center. As such, it has played host to after-school tutoring, boat-building classes, holiday celebrations, art shows and much more, says McPherson. But in recent years, enthusiasm for maintaining that level of activity has waned. The board is down eight members and has had trouble drumming up funds for upkeep and repairs, says McPherson. But interest in the school still exists. The question now is, who will step up to help McPherson and her fellow advocates? Donating to the cause - either with time or money - is simple. Just call McPherson at (732) 841-4712.
