Those who find their peace, excitement, mystery and entertainment in books will find a wealth of resources to fill those needs at the annual book sale hosted by American Associated of University Women.
CLARE MARIE CELANO Joan Odud (l-r), Trudi Iwanski and Paula Dulskiare preparing for the annual American Association of University Women used book sale that is held in Freehold Borough every summer. The 2009 sale will be held on June 25, 26 and 27, with a special preview June 24.
The book sale will be held at the First United Methodist Church, 91 W. Main St., Freehold Borough, from June 24-27.
A preview of the book sale will be held from 3-8 p.m. June 24 and a $7 admission will be charged on that day only.
There will be no admission charge when the book sale opens from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. June 25- 26, and from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. June 27.
The First United Methodist Church is air conditioned.
This event has been hosted in Freehold Borough since 1973, according to AAUW member Joan Vastbinder, of Freehold Township.
Vastbinder has been an AAUW member for 30 years and has participated in volunteer efforts for the book sale for much of that time.
"We will have books for adults and children," she said.
The large collection of books that will be available for purchase will offer 50 subject categories, including education, crime, mystery, psychology, romance, military, health, gardening and entertainment.
"We offer books about animals and anthropology, all the way to women and westerns," Vastbinder said.
Most of the used books will sell for between 50 cents and $1.50, with the exception of some special books such as coffee table edition books or first editions, which will go for a higher price, according to Vastbinder.
AAUW members begin collecting used books in October, according to Vastbinder, who said association member Joan Odud opens her garage to act as book collecting central, taking all of the book donations and holding onto them until other members come to pick them up to bring them to a central location for storage.
"Bless her heart," Vastbinder said of Odud.
Vastbinder explained that the AAUW is the oldest national organization dedicated to the advancement of women. She said the organization advocates equity for women and girls through education and research.
"There are over 100,000 members in America, including those in Puerto Rico and Guam," she said.
The organization was created in November 1881, according to Vastbinder, when 17 young women gathered together at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and decided to form an association of college women.
"There were not many women in colleges in those days," Vastbinder said.
She said the AAUW raises money for scholarships for women throughout the year. The book sale is one of the group's fundraising projects.
"The scholarships and grants we provide are at various levels," she said.
The Freehold AAUW presents an annual award to senior girls in the Freehold Regional High School District, and to women who are returning to college.
