I thought that this was an interesting letter, and query. I do not believe that we have had any layoffs in the borough.
Resident questions benefits available to local officials
How can our Township Committee members in Freehold Township receive any pay while allowing our public safety to be put in jeopardy? At the public meeting on April 28 a police officer asked the committee members to forgo their salaries to avoid possible police layoffs.
Committeewoman Dorothy Avallone responded by saying that the committee members "only" receive between $8,000 and $10,000 for old-timers like herself.
I stood up and said that if they forgo their salaries, that could save anywhere between $50,000 to $60,000. I also questioned our part-time employees as to why they receive a pension and benefits. I also questioned about cars being leased for any of these people to use. They denied the car lease and pensions, which have been rumored that they do receive these things but it is hidden from the public.
On the issue of benefits, Committeeman Anthony Ammiano said he does not receive benefits, whereas Committeeman David Salkin, who owns a business, takes benefits that we as taxpayers pay for. The rest of the committee did not respond. Why do parttime employees receive benefits, especially business owners, at taxpayers' expense?
Mr. Salkin stated that (the committee members) need the amount of money they are paid to attend all the functions they go to. What exactly are all these functions and how important are they? Why do taxpayers foot the bill for them to socialize?
It is time that Freehold Township residents step forward and vote for new people at the next election. These people have been in power way too long and are now putting our lives in jeopardy while they enjoy taxpayers' dollars for salaries, benefits and pensions.
Where are all the records displayed for the public to see every dollar spent for them? How about viewing their personal income tax returns? Do any of these people honestly need any of this money and benefits?
