Here is an account of the past rental board meeting.
First point- I was the only visitor. Those of you reading should come out to these meetings and support what they are doing.
Two new members have been appointed. Jeanne Vigeant who is a real estate agent, and Chris Robinson " Cortez", who is a tenant in the family side of the Rug Mill.
The beginning of the meeting centered around the Rug Mill and the work being done. Cameras have been installed. There was also discussion of improvements being done to the place. Much discussion centered around the poor conduct of visitors to the building as well as a small handful of bad apples who live there. The combined makes life for people on the family side not as a good as it should. Discussions also centered around specific security guards not doing their job. The senior side of the building does not report the same problems as the family side.
Discussions continued about the Code enforcement forum that will take place on May 20th. This is the second part to the forum that the Human Relations Committee did a while back. The CIC is working on press releases and fliers will be distributed. When the exact info becomes available, I will post it here. This is a very important forum that all should attend. The Rental Board is seeking community involvement and feed back to both the board and the code office.
On an interesting note, Jeanne did speak about perceptions and observations from within the local real estate community. She mentioned that a number of the investment properties are going up for sale and some have even gone into foreclosure. She also mentioned that there is a rise in young families coming to the borough. Apparently, the investment community ( or as we call them -the slumlords) are not making the money they once were.
Here is the best part- Jeanne also mentioned that Freehold is gaining a better reputation as a tough town on landlords who would degrade us. That may be a surprise to some as it goes against the past reputation we had as a a free for all town. Matt from the code office was there and appeared quite happy to hear this.
The things Jeanne was speaking about completely backed up discussions from the first Rental Board meeting when Hank Stryker and Joe Bellina were there. Both hank and Joe mentioned that the numbers were leveling off in the investment community. These promising trends are showing that the town is going in the right direction. As I have opined before, it will take time to turn things around. It is unfortunate that the bad economy is one factor, but this will be a chance for the good people of this town to redefine our town instead of allowing outside and negative influences do it for us.
