www.app.com/article/20090326/NEWS/90326107FREEHOLD — Monmouth County Freeholder Director Barbara J. McMorrow has quit her re-election bid, citing unspecified health reasons. McMorrow made the announcement at Thursday afternoon's board workshop meeting, reading from a prepared statement but stopping at times to collect herself. "Many of you who know me well have known that during the past few months I have been dealing with a number of health issues,'' McMorrow said. "Unfortunately, they have not been resolved. I have made a very difficult and painful decision. I will not seek re-election to the Board of Chosen Freeholders this year. I will make my best effort to continue to serve the people of Monmouth County for the remainder of my term and will focus the time and energy that a re-election campaign requires on regaining my health.'' McMorrow cried when she was finished. The meeting was immediately recessed and McMorrow left the meeting room. She didn't return for the conclusion of the meeting, though board colleagues said they believe McMorrow will finish her term. McMorrow won election in November 2006 to a three-year term.

Wow, what sad news. I really admire Barbara. She is a class act and emanates good will. I have had the pleasure of meeting her several times and chatting. She enjoys empowering people to reach their own potential. I pray she is able to swiftly overcome her health challenges and achieve a great state of wellness. I agree. McMorrow is one of the very few Dems I have ever voted for. I think she has ben very good for Monmouth County as a Freeholder. It has been a shame that her Dem counterparts have been such bummers. I always hoped she would leave the dark side and become a Republican. Either way, with McMorrow out, it will be very crucial to put the county seat back in the hands of the GOP. The Dems are turning us into every other Dem county and that is not good at all.
