Casagrande: Thanks, Governor! NJ’s Unemployment Rate Now Surpasses the National Level
Noting that for the first time since October 2006, New Jersey’s unemployment rate has surpassed the national level, Assemblywoman Caroline Casagrande today said Governor Jon Corzine should get off his “budget bus tour” and head back to the State House to work on solving the state’s economic crisis.
“The way to create jobs is by attracting new business,” stated Casagrande . “Instead of raising taxes which only adds additional burdens to our businesses, Governor Corzine should be cutting taxes and the throngs of regulations and red tape that is forcing them out of state.”
“While another 10,000 workers recently joined the state’s unemployment line, Governor Corzine has embarked on a statewide PR campaign touting his latest spending plan in an effort to bump up his dismal approval ratings ahead of this year’s election,” said Casagrande,
R-Monmouth. “The state is shedding jobs at an alarming rate and the Corzine Administration responds by creating a working group to monitor the effectiveness of job creation through his Economic Assistance and Recovery Plan.”
The 12th Legislative District legislator was referring to staged home visits the governor is making to middle class families in an effort to gain support for his proposed $29.8 billion budget. The plan calls for $1 billion in tax hikes, a reduction of property tax rebates and cuts in municipal aid which will significantly increase property tax rates. The proposal also includes hikes in the state’s payroll tax and extends the CBT tax surcharge.
Casagrande said the plan will deliver yet another punishing blow to New Jersey’s business community. “The Governor needs to stop creating new onerous regulations on businesses. The state needs to streamline its economic growth programs, and follow the example of states that have been successful in attracting new business growth,” said Casagrande.
According to figures released today by the Department of Labor and Workforce Development, New Jersey’s unemployment rate skyrocketed to 8.2 percent in February, up from 7.3 percent in January. It now surpasses the national unemployment rate which stands at 8.1 percent. It is the 13th straight month the state’s unemployment rate has increased.
Nearly 20,000 mostly private sector jobs were lost in February, bringing total job losses this year to 30, 000. Eight of 10 industries suffered job losses, including manufacturing, construction, financial, general professional and business services.
