FREEHOLD — The most serious charges filed last year against a former Freehold woman who had been accused of running into a police car were initially downgraded, and now they have been dismissed, officials said.
Earlier this month in Freehold Municipal Court, Denise Moss, 29, of Asbury Park, pleaded guilty to violating a borough ordinance prohibiting disorderly conduct and to reckless driving, according court records. She lost her driver's license for 30 days, according to those records.
The other traffic tickets and assault, weapons and DWI charges that had been filed against Moss were dismissed.
Last year, Freehold police said they had reports that Moss threatened people with a large knife, and they said when Officers Chris Otlowski and Sandra Vega went to the neighborhood to investigate, Moss struck a police cruiser with her car.
Police also said they found a large butcher knife in the car, and they said she left an 8-year-old home alone, so they called the state Division of Youth and Family Services.
But Moss said she was not driving drunk in July 2008. She said she was trying to get away from a group of women who tried to jump her while she was cleaning out her car and her then 8-year-old daughter was in the house, watching cartoons.
The 29-year-old said she did not want to draw the group of women toward the house, near her daughter, so she got in the car and drove off. She said she did not leave her daughter alone because her sister was barbecuing in the backyard of the home.
Moss said when she spotted the police car, she began to drive toward it to get help, but had an anxiety attack and passed out. That's when her car rolled into the police cruiser, she said.
Last year, Moss was charged with two counts of aggravated assault on a police officer, and one count each of unlawful possession of a weapon, resisting arrest and driving while intoxicated, police said. Those charges were initially remanded to municipal court, and now they have been dismissed.
