Last night was a good meeting for this new committee and it is evident that they have a lot of work ahead.
Discussions covered a lot of ground. They are going to host the second forum on rental issues. The HRC did the tenant landlord one. This one will be for the neighbors and surrounding residents who have complaints. This meeting is planned for early May.
There was a lot of discussion about Red Bank as a comparison to our town. Our rental board will review More red Bank ordinances including the one found in this thread...

Discussions were heavy in reference to the obstacles our town have been handcuffed with. It is evident that the law suit really hurt this town badly. Our code enforcement office has basically been rendered ineffective when compared to what Red Bank is doing. The question is, were we wrong to accept that suit or is Red bank wrong for their practices? At least Red Bank is getting results. Our town has turned into a free for all. That is what happens when we watch a problem grow and we wait and see, instead of taking proactive steps like we should have years ago.
One of the big solutions discussed is the very real need to engage the public more. This was a topic of discussion that was mentioned at the last meeting that I also brought up. The way I put it is that the code office has to think in terms of customer service and really engage people who may have complaints far more than what is going on now. Educating surrounding home owners is key to success.
There was also good discussions about the Rug Mill. Valiant efforts are underway to make that a better place. that is the right thing to do, but I am still a pessimist about that place. Making it better goes against the nature of the beast.
On the plus side, the HRC is looking to get involved with the Rug Mill and are going to hold a meeting there to better engage the residents. That is a very good idea.
