Who will you vote for in the upcoming FRHSD school board election? This may be one of the most important elections for this district in a decade. 4 seats are up for grabs - this could result in a meaningful change in the balance of power and status quo.

Momsthoughts,
It is good to have you on the Freehold Voice. The regional issues are one that we have been surprisingly silent about here. We often focus our attention on the elementary schools. I hope that you will post often to keep us better updated. You are right- these are important elections for people to pay attention to. And have no fear, unlike other sites, we will not censor you for your opinions or beliefs.
I will give you fair warning- the polls on this site usually do not do well, even when we have heavy visitation and participation. For now, I have abstained my vote until I find out more about Mr. Moses.
Thank you for posting the yahoo group. It is good and informative read. I encourage all readers to frequent that site and find our more about the issues we will be voting on.

Hey Brian! Thanks for the warm welcome. I will confess, I too was a citizen who mostly paid attention to the local k-8 school board. Until I read a little letter to the editor in the Transcript back in June. The letter accused the Superintendent and 2 Assistant Superintendents of buying a fake a degree with tax dollars from an unaccredited diploma mill. I swear I thought to myself "no way, that is ridiculous, this sounds like someone just looking to make trouble"....but then each week the story unfolded in the Asbury Park Press as well as other media....it was an incredible drama with all sorts of twists and turns...like when Wasser berated a student at a BOE meeting - having a temper tantrum when the student innocently referred to him as "mr. wasser" instead of "DR Wasser"....He humiliated that student on what was an innocent yet prophetic slip. Then the good "doctor" (ha ha) went to the students school the next day to write him up for insubordination! I was appalled and decided then and there I needed to know more about who exactly was running our district.
Of course from there it got worse. Wasser has a tremendous ego and rules by intimidation. The board is asleep at the wheel. They approve EVERYTHING Wasser tells them to - and they had the audacity to state that publicly at a BOE meeting. so much for "oversight". They also said "we don't answer to you". clearly they have their objectives confused - THEY DO WORK FOR US - and THEY ARE THERE TO OVERSEE EVERYTHING WASSER DOES!
As a result of posting my thoughts online - I received an anonymous threat letter!!! (I had posted anonymously and used an anonymous email address to join the site where I was posting - they must have hacked the system to get my IP address - there are other reasons why I also believed they hacked to get my personal info) I was shocked and scared. I spoke to some other people and they said several vocal people who spoke out against the Diploma Mill scandal also got these threats. I had to go to the county prosecutor and speak with detectives! Then we learned about all the teachers and parents who have been intimidated and threatened with retaliation over the years - so everyone stays quiet to protect their livihood and family.
The board refused to file tenure charges against Wasser for the diploma mill scandal. why??? I thought. Then I learned of how many of them have family that work in the district or back office deals, etc...if they went up against wasser - they would suffer. so we are stuck.
that is until board member Katie Goon stepped down. this means instead of having the usual 3 seats up for grabs - we now have 4 seats! This could finally mean a significant change in the way this district is run. We have the chance to put an end to back office deals, intimidation, threats, etc.. we can put an end to wasteful spending like diploma mill doctorates with pay and pension raises to go with them...to $750/mo luxury SUVs for the Supt.....like the $50k+ legal bill the tax payers are stuck with for protecting WASSER in the diploma mill scandal. Yes, we are paying to protect wasser from ourself! its insane. Wasser's ironclad contract is up in this coming year. If we want to put an end to the insanity - it has to be now. We have to have a majority board to vote no to renewing his contract. It has always been my belief that we can do better than a cheat who rules by intimidation. As the largest school district in the state - we can and should do better for our kids. And we should be using hard earned tax dollars for the kids not for fake degrees and pay raised for 5 people, luxury vehicles, legal fees, trips to california, etc...that money should be used for the kids!
So, that is why - in a nutshell - why this election is so vital. I know the people in the Freehold borough work hard for their money and care a great deal about their children. That is why it is so important they vote in this election. We don't need to continue to fund Wasser and his shenanigans. We need a board who will represent the people and who will hold sacred the job of protecting our tax dollars.
I hope I get to hear from the good people on your site!

Hi, Momsthoughts! I just wanted to stop in here and encourage you to please feel free to contribute any other "mom's" thoughts on here! After all, nobody is more wonderful than Mom! Thanks so much for taking your time to start this thread. Thank you!! Not to worry - I have plenty of thoughts and opinions...lol. I think this looks like active and fun message board! I look forward to participating! I love your quote "In a ham-and-egg breakfast, the chicken is involved but the pig is committed." That is very funny! Thanks again for the nice welcome!

It just shocks me and maybe I am naive - but I thought "THREAT LETTERS" only happened on Lifetime movies of the week - I was scared and shocked that this nonsense was happening right in our little corner of the world. A local school board full of corruption, scandal, intimidation, back office deals, nepotism like one has never seen, threats, bullying, etc....Isn't it almost too ridiculous to believe. In my opinion, it is an honor to be hired as a Superintendent of the largest district in the state - you don't spit at the people who hired you and that is what Wasser is doing. It is time for a change - to stop this nonsense and to get back to the business of educating our kids and fiscal responsibility.
Our community deserves better.
(ps - I love the Easter bunny - I will look for the details!!)

Mr. Moses is a recent retiree from the Borough High School. He coach both boys and girls state champion soccer teams. His sociology class was a favorite of students for many years.
He and a fellow teacher -- Mr. Koba -- play in a band together -- or did. They were known as the "half-brothers."
I still remember there tribute to a colleague who passed -- when they sang "Teach your children" over the PA in memoriam.
I had him as a teacher, and i enjoyed his class greatly -- some 26 years ago. I don't know his platform or stand on the issues -- but his dedication to the School system and his success in the class and as a leader of young athletes is a matter of record.

Most of what I have read about him seems to echo your thoughts. I do know we can do better than Bunny Hammer. She has sat by and allowed this to happen. Everyone on the current board is culpable. The entire scandal and theft involving fake degrees happened on their watch. THEY APPROVED IT. They were given the duty by the people of this district to oversea and protect our interests. THEY FAILED TO DO THAT. I do not think any of them deserve to "serve". I have heard a lot of good things about Mr. Moses. As long as he has what it takes to represent the PEOPLE of the district - I think he will be a great asset. I would LOVE to hear him say he won't renew Wasser's contract or the legal teams contract. I would love to hear him say he will approve only those expenses that directly improve education for the children (for example - I do not see how a $750 a month luxury SUV for Wasser to drive around in benefits the children) But at this point anyone is an improvement over the current board.

First order of business. I started a new sub board dedicated to the Regional BOE. It is long over due.
This topic is one that has been in the news for quite a while and amazingly, we have been too silent on it. Besides this Wasser issue, there are many other regional issues, many of which are good, to discuss. This forum will cover all of that.

This is one hell of a post and a strong testament as to why people need to pay attention and vote. Our regional schools are top notch and to have this type of nonsense going on is a disgrace. There was one red flag that hit recently and really caught my attention. Bunny Hammer said something along the lines that the board should be translucent, not transparent. That should get any person worried. Government at all levels needs to be as open as possible and as transparent as possible. Be it a governing body or a school board, these elected people need to know they serve us. They answer to we the people, not the other way around. Anytime people in power forget that, they need to be bounced ASAP. It does sound like the regional BOE needs some real change. Momsthoughts, keep posting here and keep us educated. It is good to have you.

This thread has become very hot and well read. There has been some interesting discussion. What we are lacking is articles from new papers. With the Wasser must go site down, it is that much more important to get these articles.
So here is what we need,
1. Articles on diploma-gate to provide a reminder to readers.
2. Articles that back up what momsthoughts wrote about the student who was berated.
3. Articles on Moses and Hammer, the two FB candidates so that we get an idea of who we are voting for. Balanced views of both would be great.
If anybody can find stuff on the above to post, it will be very welcome.

Hammer, Moses seek FRHSD seat BY CLARE MARIE CELANO Staff Writer FREEHOLD — Bernice "Bunny" Hammer will square off against Harold "Heshy" Moses for the Freehold Borough seat on the Freehold Regional High School District Board of Education in the April 21 election. Hammer is the current representative from the borough. Under the board's voting system, residents of Freehold Borough and Freehold Township will vote for the representative of Freehold Borough. Hammer, who said she is "of the age of majority," is a retired educator. All of her children attended Freehold Borough elementary schools and Freehold High School. Those of her grandchildren who live in the district attended FRHSD schools. She presently has a grandchild attending one of the FRHSD schools. Moses, who said he will be "60 years young" in May, has lived in Freehold Borough for 19 years. He is a retired teacher and coach who taught at Freehold High School for more than 30 years. Moses said that since he retired from teaching and coaching in 2006, his only job now is singing and playing guitar in the "Half Brothers" duo." Moses has no children in the district; however, he said he does have many "kids of kids" that he taught at Freehold High School. The candidates were asked and responded to the following questions. What do you believe makes you a qualified candidate for a seat on the board? Bunny Hammer: Aside from meeting all the legal requirements necessary to run, I believe I have demonstrated by my involvement my passion for educating the children of our district. Since school taxes make up the greatest portion of one's property tax, I have shown concern that the taxpayer get the most for his or her money. I feel I am a qualified candidate for the board by demonstration and articulation. I have often marched to beat of a different drummer, often expressing myself contrary to the majority. Unfortunately, eight-tenths of a vote (the value of the Freehold Borough representative's vote on the nine-member FRHSD board) gets lost. Experience has taught me how to be effective without alienating the quality of education for my community's kids. Heshy Moses: I believe I am a qualified candidate because I taught and coached for 35 years in Freehold High School and know all too well the problems facing the district. What do you consider to be the most pressing issues the school district faces at this time and what would you do as a board member to help resolve these issues? Bunny Hammer: I believe the most pressing issues facing the district are maintaining excellence of education for all kids in the district and doing it in a frugal way for the taxpayers; all of this while there is a pall over the district. Heshy Moses: I think the most pressing issues facing the district at this time would be the negative publicity and credibility the district acquired (due to an administrators' diploma scandal), and how the budget is spent in the district. I would try to resolve these problems by asking for a change in leadership at the highest positions (that's plural) in the district. As for how the budget is dispersed, I would call for a greater board oversight. If you are elected to the board you may be serving when the superintendent's contract is up for renewal. What is your position on his future in the district? Bunny Hammer: The superintendent has a contract until 2011. He must be notified in 2010 whether or not his contract will be renewed. Should he try to renegotiate his contract before it is due, I shall vote against it as I did the three times he did that in the past. I am the only sitting board member who has voted against his contract. I strongly believe a contract is a contract. He must be committed to it until the appropriate time for renegotiation. Heshy Moses: I believe I answered this question — he has no future. Do you have any relatives who work for this school district? Bunny Hammer: I have no relatives working for the school district. Heshy Moses: I have no relatives working for the school district. newstranscript.gmnews.com/news/2009/0408/front_page/012.html

I am so happy to see this article posted here! It is important everyone gets to hear from the candidates. Personally, I have to say I agree with what Mr. Moses had to say. I would love to have both candidates answer questions posted here directly by the members of the community! Wouldn't that be great if we could get them to participate on this board?
Thank you for posting the Brian! Good article!

Your presence on this site had elevated a topic that we needed to discuss. I agree, this article is a good. It gives us something to chew on. It would be really nice to hear more from the candidates. That goes for the local BOE candidates too. I still have no reason to vote for or against any of the Borough k-8 BOE candidates. Getting both Hammer and Hershey to the site would be great. If anybody knows how to reach them, please send thme an invite. I will do what I can to accomodate either or both. The reality is, most candidates and elected leaders are very shy about posting on open and honest forums like this one. To his credit, we do have Andrew DeFonzo who posts and keeps us both informed and educated about the elementary schools. We have had other elected leaders, but they have found it easier to be quiet, which is a real shame.

Perhaps if it were moderated in some way - even to have people submit their questions, you give the questions to the candidates - and they send back their responses back and you post them. It is controlled - but it is a way to get some questions answered and they aren't put on the spot or don't have to deal with dimwits just looking to make trouble? Maybe some how we can reach out to them? I may have Bunny's email address...any one know Mr. Moses email address? Can't hurt to at least ask?

PS here is a reality check about either candidate participating here. Challengers are more likely to come to an open forum. Incumbents in either race are not, they will have to defend their records. In the case of this election, either candidate would be wise to sign up and share some thoughts. BOE elections usually have a very low voter turn out. There is enough traffic on this site where an election could be won by one or the other as the result of participating here.

I think this election will be one of the most important and active in years. I say that for two reasons: Wasser and the economy.
The people are sick of seeing money wasted and even the hint of fraud. Wasser went too far with the fake degree - and fake degrees for his staff. It not only wasted taxpayer funds that should have gone to the students, but it sets a terrible example for our students. You don't get to lead the largest school district in the state - and take short cuts with fake degrees. OUR COMMUNITY DESERVES BETTER. Then he rubs salt in the wounds by leasing a luxury vehicle that has a monthly cost to the taxpayers as big as a lot of residents monthly mortgage payment! He and his staff all took pay raises for their fake degrees in addition to the tuition. They have refused to return that. They have also run up an enormous legal bill! We are paying for a lawyer to defend Wasser from ourselves!
In this economy, people can not stand for waste. People want representation who will look out for the students and the community. We can no longer afford wasteful spending or taking money away from our students. Personally, I am outraged to think that the students at some of the high schools were unable to watch the inauguration this year. This was an historic inauguration that every American wanted to witness yet the kids in the district couldn't even listen to it on a radio for God's sake. The technology wasn't there! My child's teacher was trying to get it on the internet - couldn't, it is restricted. Tried tv, couldn't because its closed circuit. Couldn't get it on a radio. Can you believe it? (the funny thing is half the students could get in on their cell phone internet - but because cell phones are banned, they couldn't use that option either) There are better things the board should be spending money on - but instead, the board of ed approved a lease on a luxury SUV for Wasser at a cost of over $750/mo.!
I think tax payers will come out this year to vote down the budgets, forcing board of ed to do a better job. We all know that voting down a budget will not take away from the academic needs of the students as most of that is state mandated - it will send a message to the board to do a better job however.
I think taxpayers will also come out to vote for representation that actually represents the community. Too many of the current board members have family working in the district which limits their ability to represent us and it also provides great incentive for them to go along with whatever Wasser wants - Board members with family in the district can't afford to have their incomes compromised - so they go along with Wasser. Too many of the board members have been at it too long and have lost interest. They are just going thru the motions.
I honestly believe that if we had different board members in place at the time of Wasser-gate, diploma scandal, it never would have happened. They claim that Wasser by passed the "system" for tuition reimbursement so they had no way of knowing. To that I say: No one on that board questioned where Wasser and his administrators all got Doctorate degrees? No one on that board thought to ask who paid for those doctorate degrees? No one on the board noticed Wasser and the administrators all had pay raises for the doctorate degrees? No one thoughts to verify accreditation? They all knew about the school because it was recognized in the meeting minutes. They just didn't care. And they didn't care when the scandal broke. None of them have required the money be returned. None of them have filed tenure violations with the state (which is the ONLY way to get rid of Wasser) They all are just waiting for it to go away. That is not the sort of representation I want.
I really think people will want to participate this year!!! I sure hope so!!!

www.youtube.com/watch?v=1XuUpUrtKvAThis is a video of the FRHSD BOE meeting. Two district employees had traveled to China and were sharing their experience with the BOE. Bunny Hammer asks a question about how they were treated with specific regard to how he "looked" (at almost exactly 1:00 minute into the video) She makes a statement to the gentleman that went something like: "You don't look like every other American"....Seems to me, inherent in being American is that we do not all look alike. We come is all colors, shapes and sizes. That is our greatest asset. You see, I believe one of the gentleman giving the presentation is African American. I wonder if she would ask the same question now with Obama as our President? I wonder just what she thinks "every other American" looks like? In my opinion - she doesn't have much experience outside of her little world. This was a terrible question for a community leader.

I agree. My thoughts exactly! I love Freehold for that very reason. It was a strange remark and she just seems out of touch with the reality of our community.
Would be nice to have her explain that remark here!! I would love to hear that response!
