FREEHOLD — A 12-year-old girl was killed this morning in a house fire on Court Street, authorities said.
The girl was identified as Kaylee Ramos by Monmouth County First Assistant Prosecutor Peter E. Warshaw Jr.
Neighbors said flames tore through the house at around 3:30 a.m. today, and firefighters worked frantically to douse the fire.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation, Warshaw said.
Further details were not immediately available.

It didn't take long, but it appears that many people from all over our community are interested in helping this family out. I believe efforts are underway to do something for them during this tragic time.
I will post what ever information I get as it comes in. Please check back often and when the right information becomes available, help this family out.

The video said she was on the third floor. Looks like an attic space to me. Is that a common place to sleep in that type of house?

www.app.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20090202/NEWS/90202026FREEHOLD — A 12-year-old borough girl died this morning when a fire tore through her family's Court Street home. Kaylee Ramos, a sixth-grader, died in the fire that was reported around 3:25 a.m., said First Assistant Monmouth Prosecutor Peter E. Warshaw Jr. He said the cause of the fire remains under investigation. Late this morning, some pieces of siding on the yellow house had been ripped off and other pieces were charred. Windows were broken, and holes had been cut in the roof. A plastic Santa Claus stood in the front yard, across from a snowman holding a wreath. A Christmas flag still hung from the porch. Neighbors said firefighters frantically fought the flames that shot from windows of the home early this morning. Ric Reilly, 52, said the loud fire trucks and yelling firemen awoke him. He looked outside and saw two fireman climbing up ladders, toward the steeply pitched roof of the house. "I'll tell you what, those guys had a lot of guts," he said. He said flames began to jump out of the hole that had been cut in the roof by firemen, so other firefighters moved to the back of the house with hoses, trying to douse the flames. "These guys were unbelievable," he said. "They put their lives in their hands. They did everything they could." He said he is praying for the family. "It's a shame," said Reilly. "I feel so bad. That's a horrible thing." The cause of the fire is under investigation by Freehold Detective Sgt. Tim Jablonski, the Monmouth County Prosecutor's Office, and the Monmouth County Fire Marshals Office. Kaylee attended Freehold Intermediate School and had a sister is in fifth grade at the Freehold Learning Center, according to Schools Superintendent Elizabeth O'Connell. Grief counselors have been at both schools since early Monday morning. Counselors are seeing children individually or in groups, depending on what the students prefer, O'Connell said. Fifth graders who knew Kaylee are making cards today, O'Connell said. 'It's much more of an impact over at the intermediate school,' O'Connell said, since more students at that school knew Kaylee. Staff Writer Kim Predham contributed to this story.

could be a common place, many old homes have third floor bedroms. That is not very safe. If there was a fire it might be hard to get out. Right now I do not believe second guessing what might have occurred is the issue. We don't have all the facts anyway. The focus right now is to help this family as they face this tragedy. I know they will receive an out pouring of community support and that needs to be the focus. Fire safety tips can come later.

Third floor is what I heard. I looked at the window on the news, and it seemed like a narrow window. But, of course, I only saw one side of the building, and as Brian said - we don't know the facts and more important is the current needs of this family. Please keep us informed Brian. ... Not taking this particular fire as an example - but speaking in general terms, perhaps a firefighter that reads this forum can take some time to educate readers of this forum on some fire safety.

I realize that we don’t have all the facts so that’s why I’m asking questions. We should know the facts already if the news reporters were doing their job or should I say permitted to do their job. How many people were in the house? I’m willing to bet we never hear that from the reporters. What is the correct time period to wait before fire safety tips are given.

As I understand it, this is a single family, owner occupied home. I bet if it were an over crowding situation, the news would be on it like white on rice.
Don't worry, the topic of safety tips will come up in the public arena soon enough. Realisticaly, the time for that topic is before something awful happens. Our rental board is looking at things that way and are right to.
We still do not know if common safety sense was even violated in this case. Until we do it is better to avoid anything that may be accusing. Sometimes even with the best safety measures in place, bad things still happen.
I find it interesting that the prosecuters ofice is involved.

I just wish they got to the girl in time. This story is so unbelievably sad.
If we have to "take" something from this, then let us all be extra mindful of fire safety; if not for our own sake, then for the sake of our families and for the safety of the firefighters who risk it all to answer any call.
From what I've read about this, I am so amazed by the bravery of people who are willing to climb onto a burning roof, which can easily collapse under them, to try to save another person's life.

Hi everyone, I am new here...but I am a resident of the boro. I just wanted to say that I am so sorry to see that this happened It is truly a tragedy and I have been praying a lot for the family. To those that question things such as overcrowding, and the bedroom being on the third floor, shame on you. Do not assume anything until you live it. Do a little homework before you post. This was an owner occupied house. A good family. Not 40 people shoved into a rental. As for the attic space, yes it is very common to use that for a bedroom. We have a full-sized walk up attic that could definitely be a bedroom. Again, my deepest sympathies and prayers go out to this family. Take Care.
