Poll: Corzine, Christie in dead heat Ex-U.S. Attorney for N.J. seen as better on property taxesBy Todd B. Bates • STAFF WRITER • January 16, 2009 Democratic Gov. Jon S. Corzine is in a statistical dead heat — 38 percent to 36 percent — over potential Republican challenger Christopher J. Christie, the former U.S. Attorney for New Jersey, according to a Monmouth University/Gannett New Jersey poll."We have a state that trends Democratic, and that should be an advantage, and yet against his highest-profile potential Republican (opponent), Jon Corzine can only muster a 2 percent lead," said Patrick Murray, director of the Monmouth University Polling Institute in West Long Branch. The poll of registered voters, released today, has a marginof error of plus or minus 4.8 percent."(Corzine) has a lot of work to do to convince the voters that what he's been doing for the past three years is something they want to continue with," Murray said. When registered voters in the poll were asked who would do a better job of reducing property taxes, they felt Christie would fare better than Corzine, by a margin of 36 percent to 32 percent, according to the poll.Peter Neri, a 49-year-old small business owner who lives in Manchester, said he would "basically stick with Corzine right now." "I don't know enough about Christie," said Neri, a registered Democrat. But he might change his mind as Election Day approaches and he gets more information on Christie's views, he said. Philip Simon, 71, of Toms River said he would vote for Christie, who has announced his intention to run for governor, unless a better Republican candidate comes along. Christie is "a better man" than Corzine, said Simon, a registered Republican and retired supervisor with DuPont chemicals. Christie has "gone after corruption and all," Simon said, adding that he "figures he did a good job there." Voters polled preferred Corzine to "another Republican candidate" by 36 to 32 percent. They also gave him the nod over former Bogota Mayor Steve Lonegan (45 to 29 percent), Assemblyman Richard A. Merkt, R-Morris, (41 to 27 percent) and Franklin Township Mayor Brian Levine (44 to 27 percent). The most important issues that voters want gubernatorial candidates to talk about include: the economy/downturn in general (35 percent) and jobs (19 percent); property taxes (38 percent); education/schools (18 percent); and health care/prescription drug costs (14 percent), according to the poll. The Monmouth University/Gannett New Jersey poll was done by telephone with 413 New Jersey registered voters from Jan. 12 to 14. The Monmouth University Polling Institute conducted the poll for the Asbury Park Press, Courier-Post, Courier News, The Daily Journal, Daily Record and Home News Tribune. Todd B.
