If anyone out there enjoys Blues Music as much as I do and wants to know what the current Blues Top 50 is, here is a site you can visit: www.rootsmusicreport.com/2.0/charts.php?name=bluesThere are a few folks currently looking into the possibility of having a Jazz and Blues Festival in the Borough, as early as next year. I hope we'll hear more about that one, as it progresses. If we have the festival, I'll be camped out enjoying it. If you want to subscribe (FREE) to a great Blues discussion list go to: launch.groups.yahoo.com/group/match_box_blues/Marc

Being a guitar player I can't help myself. That is some of the best playing out there. I caught wind of a possible Blues and Jazz Fest coming to our town and I think it will be great if it happens. I will be camping right next to you! Asbury Park, Long Branch, and Red Bank all have Blues/Jazz fests and they are doing really well. FB definitely needs to join that club.

You know, Brian, it's really funny. The International Jazz Festival in Montreal had a few very nice sound stages and lots of nice posters and handouts. But when it really came down to it, the stages were mostly set up on messy empty lots where old buildings once stood and in nearby fields - nothing special.
Since some of the soundstages and tents were close to one another, the performances were staggered so as not to step on one another.
Not to say that any local towns would try to rival something on that "international" scale, but we have several places to set up a few different music venues throughout the town. Many look a lot nicer than where they placed the stages in Montreal (rock strewn lots, etc.). Meanwhile, there are no definate plans for this - I've only heard about some mild interest in looking into having some kind of festival, here.
It could be interesting, though we would want to be sure it wasn't too big so that control of such a thing was too cumbersome.

Marc In reference to all you wrote, reach out to the recreation commission. They have been discussing some really good ideas that would be in line with the festival. regardless of who spear heads it, this is a case where one hand needs to know what the other is doing.

Many of you may not be aware that Freehold Borough has it's own regionally well known Blues Artist - and she still lives in our town. Her name is Frankie Bell. I have known Frankie for years and she is a terrific person and stellar blues performer: Frankie Bell is an entertainer's entertainer, when it come to shoutin' the blues, or singing ballads, Frankie's versatility as a performer comes through every time. She takes the power of gospel, the sophisticatedd phrasing of jazz, and the raw emotion of the blues, and combines them into a voice that can be sweet, gritty or downright funky. She connects with her audiences and spreads her infectious energy and she can dance!!! She has opened for the Great Late Jonny Clyde Copeland, Sky Land Blues Festival, the Great Home Sick James and Snucky Pryor, Stan Hope House of Blues, Dave Valentine, Raritan River Fest, and others. She is a regular act at Giamano's Ristorante, Main St. , Bradley Beah, NJ. Frankie Bell rocks and her back up band was good to listen to as well. I noticed the guitarists name was Jeff Page, and relation to Mike?

I really don't know any of the band members, nor do I know if the Pages are related. I wish the quality of the video was better. It appears to have been taken at "Upstairs" at Giamanos in Bradley Beach www.giamanos.com/upstairs.html. I have been there many times. It is a very nice place to listen to Jazz and Blues. They get a nice crowd. I haven't been there in a few years, but it was once a cigar bar. A good Cigar accompanied by some smooth Cognac or Port and great Jazz and Blues is a close second to some great Bar-be-que, an ice cold beer and a shady place to listen to some fine music. Very few other types of music come with such an excellent listening culture of food and drink. Jazz and Blues can make your blood boil with energy while, your blood pressure drops from relaxation, both happen at the same time! I just popped a message to Frankie to see what she is up to, lately. If it's anything interesting that I can share. I'll add to this thread. Frankie Bell and the Blues...it just proves that our little town of less than two miles offers lots of hidden treasures. And speaking of cigars, I understand Cafe 360 is now also a Hookah Bar (people smoke flavored tobacco out of a "hookah," which is an odd looking contraption that creates a shared smoking experience through double or multiple "hoses."). I hear it is quite nice. Has anyone tried it? What is it like? Marc

The HOB in AC has a really really fun Gospel Breakfast Brunch to die for, soul food and truly excellent Gospel! This now has me thinking that here in the Borough we have soo many churches, why we don't have Borough Gospel Festival / Contest! It is a big part of Borough culture! Back to the Blues, My fav is DINO BBQ (Syracuse, Rochester and Harlem NY)...great award winning ribs, every kind of beer imaginable (and unimagined too) and an incredible road house blues atmosphere that just transcends you! Buddy Guys in Chicago is quintessential, raw, nothing glossy at all, and just plain foot stomp'n fun to where it is a total Pleasure trove of gut tugg'n Blues factory life thrill!! I had been to N'orlins in Nov 2002, and Man you can't go wrong anywhere there! Blues, jazz and blues-jazz fusion was totally a one of a kind experience (and the food too, can't go wrong anywhere there....Fired Oyster Po'boy...YUMMM) ! A great "party" night out is alway the HOB on Sunset during the week nights! There was this after hours blues joint in Detroit I went to in 1986 that was....well, lets just say I survived the experience, it was very much for local in the know, I was too nervous to enjoy the place, but...when you travel, you have to go where the local go to indulge on the native stuff thats not on the tour guilds list (because all the tourists get trapped in those tour guilds list places)!

Yes, Dinosaur BBQ is extremely popular. Up in Syracuse, it's also considered a Biker's Bar. The lines are around the block, to get in. You really need to get there early if you want to be fed at a reasonable hour. We should try the one in Harlem, when we visit my Sister-in-law & Brother-in-law. He works for Columbia and has an apartment near that DINO BBQ.
I'll be up there for the Penn State game in mid-September. That game may have a later start than usual - so, we may have to head for the Dinosaur on Friday night and Dominick's (great Italian Food ) after the game.
In NJ, try Stanhope House for great blues, too.
Never understood HOB, though - Blues is the kind of music they seem to feature least often.
As for the food part - I guess great minds "eat" alike! Thanks.

The State Theatre in New Brunswick is having a Jazz & Blues Festival during the last weekend of September. Great talent on board for three consecutive nights. www.statetheatreNJ.orgOn Saturday 9/27 they have Rod Piazza and the Mighty Flyers with John Hammond. Piazza is terrific. He's among the best Blues Harmonica Players and his wife Honey, is the best keyboard player I've ever heard!!! We've seen them in New Orleans and at the Red Bank Festival. Among the best performers I've ever seen. Tickets are ony $30-$45. Rod Piazza: Honey Piazza on Keyboard: AWESOME PERFORMANCE!!!!!!! Marc
