newstranscript.gmnews.com/news/2008/1105/letters/034.htmlMonmouth sheriff should forge ahead with plan for 287g program This past Monday, Oct. 27, I decided to see for myself what the protest against our Monmouth County sheriff was about. It was no surprise to see familiar faces to Freehold Borough protesting the sheriff and her plans on bringing federal program 287g to the county level. These groups included Casa Freehold and the Latino Leadership Alliance. As I listened to what they stated, they are either grossly misinformed of what 287g does, or they are trying to distort it. This is not the first time the open borders advocates who marched on Monday have tried to undermine public safety. In Freehold Borough we had a committee make several recommendations about dealing with rental properties in our town. I was there the night the open borders crowd packed our town hall to protest the rental recommendations. Although some of those recommendationsmay have been controversial, I recall seeing some of the same people who were present Monday stating that not one of the recommendations should be enacted. Just like 287g, these rental recommendations were proposed to protect the welfare and safety of the general public. At times the very people the open borders crowd is attempting to speak for will benefit from 287g and the rental regulations. 287g is a good program which will ensure that illegal aliens who commit crimes will not be released back into the community and instead face deportation. I find it hard to believe that any portion of any immigrant community would want criminals allowed back into their lives, jeopardizing safety. 287g is very good for those immigrants, legal or otherwise, who are good decent people and do not engage in crimes. Seeing the open borders crowd continually fighting against the safety of the very people they claim to speak for, as well as the rest of us, is appalling. I recall when the News Transcript printed an editorial on Nov. 11, 2005, which contained the following, "Casa Freehold, by virtue of its actions, comments and apparent support of illegal immigration, will never have, and does not deserve, the trust, respect and cooperation of (Freehold) borough officials." Judging by this recent protest, I believe the News Transcript was right. Sheriff Kim Guadagno is to be applauded for following through on her campaign promise to bring 287g to our county. Though this program is no silver bullet, it does provide a morsel of sanity in the mess we call illegal immigration. Illegal immigration is not a cultural or race-based issue. It is one of government failure. We need not look any further than the Fort Dix Six to see that. For quite some time we have all been told that illegal immigration is a federal issue. Well, we have a federal solution to that issue, which can be used at the local level. We should not be looking at just the directives that New Jersey Attorney General Anne Milgram issued. 287g is nothing more than furthering the training of law enforcement personnel to better do their jobs and protect the public they serve. What Sheriff Guadagno is doing will be well supported by many law-abiding citizens, especially those in towns like Freehold. I hope Sheriff Guadagno stands strong and does not allow the protesters from Oct. 27 to sway her. Brian Sullivan Freehold Borough

An APP letter... www.app.com/article/20081105/OPINION04/811050344/1032Sheriff right to ID illegal immigrants The Monmouth County Latino Leadership Alliance took umbrage at Monmouth County Sheriff Kim Guadagno's application for officers to get federal training to identify illegal aliens after certain arrests. (Commentary, "Monmouth sheriff takes immigration edict too far," Nov. 2.) Meanwhile, state Attorney General Anne Milgram has set guidelines for interaction with individuals who may be violating federal immigration law. Why does our attorney general need to set guidelines for an interview after an arrest? Why isn't every person who is arrested interviewed as to violation of immigration laws? Guadagno at least has taken an initiative to deal with this. Milgram is a Corzine appointee. Need I say more? Something has to be done to stem the tide of people entering our country illegally. But I hate to point out the obvious, which is that by early next year, there will be no more illegal aliens. They will be US citizens. Now -- I have a wild -- very wild -- theory about the coming amnesty. Here it is. I think there is a small chance that George W. Bush, prior to his departure from office, will grant amnesty to all illegal aliens currently in the US. Now -- I know that sounds a bit crazy. But, GW Bush was one of the people pushing for a version of amnesty. In addition, while many legitimate, legal immigrants despise illegal immigration -- the post election poll numbers show that even legal Hispanics are wind-sprinting from the GOP -- mostly because they have intertwined relationships in many cases with either family or friends that are here illegally. So -- George Bush -- whose popularity is in the low 20's, and who can't run again, and who obviously does not give a darn about his own poll numbers, might just declare and amnesty in an effort to improve his position with that group, and to leave that amnesty as a republican legacy. Either way -- Barack is going to do it -- which just militates more for Bush to pre-empt him. (speaking solely from a political perspective)

wait, if Bush grants illegal aliens amnesty... they will be in violation of immigration laws a second later.
The President cannot grant citizenship, and while he could grant them amnesty for past crimes, how could he grant them amnesty for continuing to act against the laws?
Anyway, I don't doubt that something major will happen to immigration under Obama - probably very quickly too. And that all efforts to enforce immigration laws today will be absolutely meaningless tomorrow.

(speaking solely from a political perspective) He will take it on the chin, and try to lock up a Latino voting block for the Republicans??? Remember George Prescott Bush, born in 1976, should be eligible to run in 2016 and or 2020... REMEMBER THIS FROM 1988..... Vice President Bush, who has been courting the votes of Hispanic Americans by bragging for weeks about the ethnic origins of three of his grandchildren, introduced them to President Reagan today as ''the little brown ones.'' Mr. Bush was referring to the children of his son Jeb and his Mexican-American daughter-in-law, Columbia. One of the children, George Prescott Bush, 13 years old, led the Republican National Convention tonight in the Pledge of Allegiance to the flag. Further, Obama reached out to normalize relations with Cuba, pissing off Cuban Americans (accept one who lives in Freehold Borough). This action MAY help swing a powerful Latino block back to the repubs as well! (speaking solely from a political perspective) ;D

I think we should normalize our relations with Cuba... and Iran... and Russia ... and Venuzuala ... and North Korea. If we are so proud of our freedoms, and we think we are such a shining example to the world, why not let these countries - and their people - come to know and learn about our ideals a bit better. While cuban americans have a hatred towards Castro, that should not be what propels our foreign policy. In fact, these Cuban Americans are limited in how they can see their relations back in Cuba, how much money they can send to their relations from Cuba, and what goods they can get from Cuba. And in 40 PLUS years of this policy towards Cuba, what good has it done?

Printed in the APP today, but not without being trimmed down to three hundred words or less. www.app.com/article/20081107/OPINION04/811070311/1032Immigration plan deserves support I decided to watch the protest against Monmouth County Sheriff Kim Guadagno was about. A couple of follow up thoughts. I see Rich and Novillero mentioned amnesty. That is likely true. I will maintain the stance that amnesty will be a final nail in the coffin for our town. That is for a number of reasons, but I will focus on the political aspect of illegal immigration that few take seriously.
With amnesty my prediction will come true. The next base of power in our town will be the open borders crowd. The current council has had little to worry about from the local GOP. The threat to unseating the council will come from the open borders crowd. The funny little irony, that will come from within the Democrat party. This is where the nuance of citizenship vs. legal residency comes into play. It will be important to see exactly what will be done. Throw in the large amount of anchor babies in this town and I can assure you, they will not be voting for the current governing body or the GOP.
The open borders crowd in this town are far from stupid. They are activists and lobbyists and know exactly what they are doing. They have several years worth of victories under their belts that will strengthen their standing in the community they serve. I have said that time is on their side, and now Obama is too. I was not wrong about that.
I recall an article in the News Transcript from several years ago, where then Councilman Kevin Coyne mentioned "white" flight and concerns surrounding it. . He was wrong about that. The appropriate term should have been American flight. If anybody takes the time to see what has happened in other town across the nation, the first to go in town where illegal immigrants move in are the poor and working class. Often that applies to black Americans first and we have see a decline in blacks in this town. Working class whites also follow in that flight.
Also, look at our businesses on Main Street. Most of West Main is Latino owned and cater to the immigrant community exclusively. Something few are aware of is that many of these newer business owners are from North Jersey. They have been making their way here. These business owners will also form a solid power base in favor of the open borders crowd.
In the above, my focus is again, on the political future and realities, not race per se.
I will also make mention that my letter was a poorly written one. I did this in haste. I can expect to see a rebuttal or two. If I had done a better job, any rebuttal would look foolish. I left the door wide open for someone to take a couple of good shots. To his credit, Laz Cardenas is a very good letter writer. I would not be surprised to see his response, and maybe even a good one.
