I heard about her last May, and the VP pick last night...Shes a member of the NRA and likes Moose Burgers Associated Press © August 29, 2008 John McCain tapped little-known Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin to be his vice presidential running mate, two senior campaign officials told The Associated Press on Friday. A formal announcement was expected within a few hours at a campaign rally in swing-state Ohio. Palin, 44, is a self-styled hockey mom and political reformer who has been governor of her state less than two years. Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin Is McCain's VP Pick: Source Posted By:John Harwood Topics:Sarah Palin | Republicans | Democrats | Barack Obama | John McCainBy John Harwood , CNBC Political Correspondent | 29 Aug 2008 | 09:24 AM ET Font size: Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin, a self-styled "hockey mom" who has only been governor for a little over a year, is GOP Presidential candidate John McCain's choice for Vice President, CNBC has learned. According to a Republican strategist, Palin is the nominee, though McCain's campaign has not comfirmed this. With an announcement scheduled in Dayton, Ohio, an associate of Minnesota Gov. Tim Pawlenty said the governor had been informed he is not McCain's pick. The official spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to speak for Pawlenty, who had all but ruled himself out. "I'm not going to be there. I plan to be at the state fair. You can draw your conclusion from that," Pawlenty said on his weekly call-in radio show on WCCO-AM in Minneapolis. He also called it "a fair assumption" that he will not be McCain's running mate. Associates close to former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney were saying the same thing, telling The Associated Press that the former presidential candidate had not been offered the job by McCain.

This morning, wikipedia called her the presumptive nominee, but it was soon taken down...
She seems like a good pick, but most people, including myself, know little about her (and maybe that is the best thing about any V.P. pick). And boy, as of right now it seems that the attack dog Biden will look silly attacking her.

Jeez, McCain is just trying to give this election away. Romney was the obvious choice. She opposes alternative energy (naturally, her husband is a big oil executive). Sorry, that don't sit right with me. She's also grossly inexperienced. And don't tell me that Obama is too. Obama's career was launched after getting an education from Columbia, then Harvard Law School, where he served as President of the Harvard Law Review (surely the highest position any American law student can possibly achieve). Obama then turned down many lucrative job offers and went out there for peanuts and served communities. His rise to this position was well earned every step of the way. Agree or disagree with his policies, you cannot take away from him the road he traveled to get to where he is today, nor can you doubt his sincere desire to help people. Palin, on the other hand, saw her career launched after a beauty pageant appearance. You can't make this up. Now, she is tabbed VP in an ill-guided attempt to impress female voters. Other than the Elizabeth Hasselbeck types, who werent going to vote for Obama anyway, no woman will be able to relate to the beauty queen who is out to make herself a quick buck by helping to change offshore drilling laws and profiting therefrom, and is stoutly anti-abortion to boot. And if McCain, at 72, is unable to last 4 years, Miss Alaska is going to be our president. Thanks but no thanks. Although I would love to.....ah nevermind.

there is an interesting write-up on wiki... Like I said, I don't know much but am learning. I heard her speech, and liked it... but we know speeches are just speeches - same as with Obama's last night. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sarah_PalinRomney was not the obvious choice. Two extremely wealthy republicans against two working class background democrats is one slash against Romney. Palin cures that, I am sure others would have cured that too. She does bring the problem of McCain not being able to attack on Obama's lack of experience. But Obama's camp brings attention to Obama's own lack of experience by calling out Palin on hers... KA19, read the wiki posting. It calls into question some of your opinions - like being in the pocket of oil. Please share some articles on her as you find them (after all it's just wikipedia, a starting point at best) Regardless, people should bone up on the Constitution and see how often the vice president is mentioned... and how many V.P. duties are covered in the Constitution... It's all dog and pony show, unless the president is unable to serve...

p.s. the federalist papers thinks the V.P. is so important it is only mentioned in one of the last letters and is so for a paragraph or two. The federalist papers likens it to a lieutenant governor.

Based on that wiki article:
She is a member of an exotic sect of Christianity known as Assemblies Of God.
A core tenet of this religion is that war is forbidden under their doctrine known as "Pacifism".
The beauty pageant contestant really does want world peace! LOL

I don't know, I think Governor Palin is pretty awesome. She just mentioned in her speech about McCain's "strength and resolve," and that is exactly what I feel from her. To me, she seems very authentic, she is dignified as well as wholesome, very clear and down to earth. I am also highly impressed that she went from a small-town to the Governor's office. this demonstrates that any dream here can come true. I like that a lot. The only thing I disagree with rather staunchly is that she would want to overturn Roe v Wade. But, I respect her opinion and stance on that. True she may be inexperienced, as she has only been the AK guv for a couple of years, but, I wish her well, simply because I am inspired by all that she has accomplished thus far and I think she's a class act. A lot of unknowns here, but that going to make an interesting champagne, because the other three candidates have gotten almost TOO much exposure for the last year, so this can turn out to be a very smart move, that make voters look closer at this republican ticket! Wow, some one new, a name we know little about but what we will learn is this woman IS one of us, a PTA president, Councilwoman, Mayor, GOV...? The "Accidental" candidate! I just hope that the other side will not get ugly, painting her as a evangelical, ultra right, bible thumping, crazy church lady. Start looking at her ability with Municipal and Gubernatorial management! None of the other three have accomplished what she has! Hey guess what, she is NOT a talking head academic elitist Ivy League Rhodes Scholar. We have not seen this very common touch on a ticket in a very, very long time (not my life time). Wow, truly one of us! Over turn RvW, not gonna happen!, but... Here is another clue as to what she is about.... www.feministsforlife.org/

I had heard about this today with little back round info on Palin. What I did hear made me think that the very perception Ka19 writes about is exactly how the GOP opponents would paint her. The GOP will have to work hard to overcome this predictable label and perception that will be created. On the good side, she is a fresh face to the national scene and that is to the GOP advantage. I also think her union ties and other credentials will be an asset to win over blue dog Dem's to McCain. She may prove to be a smart choice. Romney and some of the others carry too much baggage. No matter what happens, this election year will be a first. Either the first female Veep or the first president with African ancestry. Personally, I was hoping for Condi to come out from under the Bush cloud and show what she is made of. She has much potential.

For me, the attacks fall flat. As they attack her, they highlight the same alleged inadequacies in their own candidate.
