Biden, the Senate Foreign Relations Committee chairman, made a good impression in his losing bid for the presidential nomination this year. He provides expertise and experience in national security that Obama lacks and, as a Catholic, adds cultural diversity to the ticket. Evading national security, says Sen. Joe Biden, D-Del., would be a disastrous mistake. “The only way we lose this election is not to engage this issue head-on,” Biden said during an interview in his Capitol office the day after Obama clinched the nomination. Democrats, Biden said, should be “proactive” and not “play defense on foreign affairs” because “the case against McCain and Bush on national security is so overwhelming. ... It should be an essential part of the case for the Democratic nominee.” He should be at the top of any list of vice presidential picks for Obama. Why Biden? In part because of where he took our discussion: Few Democrats know more about foreign policy, and few would so relish the fight against McCain on international affairs. Few are better placed to argue that withdrawal from Iraq will strengthen rather than weaken the U.S. The worst thing in a running mate is the fear of muddying his or her image in political combat. Biden would be a happy warrior. He was born in Scranton, Pa., an essential state for Democrats, and has been a regular in the Philadelphia media market. Pennsylvania Gov. Ed Rendell, himself a plausible No. 2, has called Biden “a perfect fit.” The senator has been through two of his own presidential campaigns in which he experienced what an acquaintance of his called the “white hot heat” of scrutiny. Biden is Catholic and hails from a blue-collar world, two constituencies with which Obama needs help. The chairman of the Foreign Relations Committee and the former chairman of the Judiciary Committee, Biden speaks with real learning on international affairs and the judiciary—the next vacancies on the Supreme Court should be a big issue in this campaign—while never sounding like an elitist. But the central reason to pick Biden is the message the choice would send about Obama’s readiness to contest national security issues and his understanding that fixing American foreign policy must be one of the next president’s highest priorities. Biden has been critical of Bush’s approach to Iraq and the world for the right reasons, and from the beginning. In the fall of 2002, he tried, with Republican Sens. Chuck Hagel and Richard Lugar, to pass a more modest war resolution that put additional constraints on Bush. Then-House Democratic leader Richard Gephardt short-circuited the effort by cutting a deal with the president. Even before the war began, Biden was warning of the costs of a lengthy occupation and predicting a decade-long intervention. He is also frank about his misunderstanding of what Bush would do. At one point, he thought Bush was reluctant to start a war. “I vastly underestimated the total incompetence of this crew,” he says. “I could not fathom that they would do what they did under the circumstances they did it.” To restore its strength and influence, the United States needs to return to the realistic internationalism of FDR, Truman and, yes, the first President Bush. Whether or not Obama picks Biden, he should listen to what Biden is saying. Obama can’t sidestep the foreign policy debate. He has to win it.

Money seems to be on Biden... August 18, 2008 Obama VP buzz squarely on BidenPosted: 12:51 PM ET From CNN Ticker Producer Alexander Mooney CNN) – When Joe Biden returns to Capitol Hill Monday from his two-day trip to embattled Georgia, vice presidential speculation will rest squarely on him. The longtime Delaware senator and former presidential candidate has long been considered to be on the shortlist for Barack Obama's running mate, but his quickly-planned trip to Georgia Saturday night at the behest of that country's president left Washington buzzing he is the most likely choice. Watch: Will it be Biden? After all, the Georgia crisis appears to have put national security issues again at the forefront of the presidential campaign, and it's an issue where John McCain has long held the advantage over Obama. The Illinois senator, so the Beltway chatter goes, needs a running-mate with foreign policy experience now more than ever. If Biden does aspire to be on the Democratic presidential ticket, the trip couldn't have come at a better time — reinforcing his lengthy resume on matters of foreign policy and reminding voters, and Obama, he is well respected by foreign leaders half a world away. The trip also comes days before Obama is expected to reveal his VP choice — with only days remaining until the Democratic convention, the choice is expected to come this week. CNN Political Market: Biden's stock on the rise But of course Biden suggested before he left Saturday he isn't making the trip for political reasons. "I am going to Georgia this weekend to get the facts first-hand and to show my support for Georgia’s people and its democratically-elected government," he said in a statement. "I look forward to reporting to my colleagues in the Senate and on the Foreign Relations Committee, as well as the Administration, about what I learn." He may have one or two conversations with his colleague from Illinois too. politicalticker.blogs.cnn.com/

When Joe Biden returns to Capitol Hill Monday from his two-day trip to embattled Georgia, vice presidential speculation will rest squarely on him. Just reminded me, I needed to explain to one of my 7 year olds over the weekend, that the Russians DID NOT drive their tanks across the Atlantic Ocean to invade GEORGIA!!! He also expressed worry over, how come the heavy metal tanks didn't sink while crossing the Atlantic too. It was easier for me growing up I knew the difference between Georgia and (soon to be again?)"Soviet Georgia". Back in context to this thread, If there was an emerging Russian ambition to rebuild a new style Russian/Soviet empire, who would manage a global crisis with a firm upper hand? Obama or McCain?

Last month my sources proved correct. J.J. Jrs speech last night relights the dream in all of us that had been all but extinguished these last 8 years of political purgatory. Biden Obama are our Dream is alive Team Teddie was heroic. He is a real profile in courage we have not seen since this century. Michelle showed that she is a, Daughter Sister, Mother, Aunt, Cousin to all of us. She proved the Dream is alive today because both she and Barack live the Dream everyday. And through Michelle and Barack we all live the Dream too. My sources tell me that the missing councilman and friends will return to the Internet early October.

You are correct on both counts, Biden makes for an interesting Veep and will help Obama. And yes, there is very credible talk that this site will be getting some competition. My prediction, that competition will be very censorship heavy and not at all open to differing view points as this one is. Last weeks little explosion was nothing more than a show, meant to hurt this site. admin has eyes and ears everywhere.

Teddy' speech was short... I felt like he could have kept going. I don't necessarily agree with what he said, but he had the crowd with him and that helps make great speeches.
Michele's speech - at it's political points - seemed a little cultish to me. (Everything is wrong and come to us to be saved.) She did however humanize herself, her family, her background, etc. She probably shed a lot of the elitist ideas about her. Barrack's message afterwards was strange and awkward.
The other parts of the convention were, well, boring as hell. Several commentators on CNN were pretty much in agreement that this is not what you want a convention to be like. Teddy and Michele helped save the first day of the convention, but did people on the east coast stay awake for Michele's speech?

I have to agree with Novillero...that video doesn't have much substance...just like the rest of Barack Obama's campaign. It highlights all of the hot issues and topics, and says nothing about how he's going to deal with them.
I know, I know...
*He's going to pull our troops out of Iraq (although we don't know how, how quickly, or what he plans on doing to protect the work that has been done over there).
*He's going to lower gas prices by taxing the oil companies...does anyone really believe this is going to work? Since when does a company not pass extra expenses like that down to the consumer?
*He's going to get health care coverage for every man woman and child in America...oh this is a nightmare that deserves it's own thread. The government can't control a couple hundred miles of border with Mexico...you want them in charge your health and the health of your family? And how do you think all that is getting paid for?
Before the attack dogs jump on me, let me say that I am by no means campaigning for John McCain right now either...but I am getting a little sick and tired of everyone talking about how Barack Obama is going to bring about "the change we need" without coming up with any ideas of just how he's going to bring about that change.
And I have to ask...since the beginning of that video was Senator Obama saying "There is no black America, no white America, no Hispanic America, no Asian America, only the United States of America"...does that mean I can say that there are no African Americans, no Italian Americans, no Mexican Americans, no Chinese Americans, no French Americans, only an AMERICANS?
just curious...

I'm surprised that fat drunken murderer is still alive. I want the heath care that he has. I almost don't want to post this, because I don't want to seem like I am picking on a man who is going through cancer...but while watching the "tribute" video last night, it started out with this big message about how the water and the ocean are so important to Ted Kennedy. Being on the water is so calming, so rejuvenating, blah blah blah. I couldn't help but think about the water between Martha's Vineyard and Chappaquiddick Island... it just seemed like a rather odd way to start the tribute video.

Actually, this all is not that far off. Since we are on the subject of Mr. "Left wing environmentalist" Ted Kennedy, I recall reading that this champion of the environment fought against wind farms off of his states coast. It appears that he an his other elite friends did not want their view ruined because of this renewable energy source.

Massachusetts and specifically Boston have long been bastions of liberalism and protecting the poor, and in particular, looking out for the minorities...when in reality, they were "looking out for the minorities" to make sure they weren't moving into their backyards!!! I love the city of Boston...I really do. I don't know of another city that embraces their history quite as well as Boston does...but my goodness what a white town that city is!!!

I'm surprised that fat drunken murderer is still alive. I want the heath care that he has. The real irony is that the candidate of "change" brought out a dinosaur, Ted Kennedy, to kickstart his convention. Of course, his running mate is no candidate of change either.
