I got to thinking about the history of Freehold; all of the old buildings and the centuries of traffic that has passed through the area and thought that there must be some interesting tales. A couple of Google searched turned up almost nothing. A few things other than Molly Pitcher and the Psychic on Main Street, including a meteor that crashed into a house and a woman that claims to have seen the Jersey Devil in 2007. Any tales?

Funny that you should mention this. Next week at our Historical Preservation Meeting I am making the recommendation that the committee join forces with "Spooktacular" to present a "Ghost Tour" for Halloween. I'm sure we can include in such a tour: Covenhoven House, The Parker House, Boxwood Hall, Barkalow Avenue Cemetary and other places around town that might be haunted - or at least CAN be haunted for Halloween. Perhaps, we can dress up and scare people as they go around town to be "spooked" while getting a gander at our terrific historic buildings and homes. What a great way to merge the two activities. Don't you agree?
Of course, we'd be looking for some great stories about "The Ghosts of Freehold," to tell the brave souls signing up for the after dark adventure!

Considering the astounding success of SPOOKTACULAR and all its events, it is a very good idea to build on it.

Do you have any backround on Tom Joad and the alleged sighting? I can tell you there had been over a hundred witnesses including the Mayor, maybe a few Council members too...

I was wondering about this too. Y'all are kidding, right? OK, at risk of seeming a little dense, I pointed my browser to Wikipedia. I know who Tom Joad is, and I semi-remembered that Bruce Springsteen released an album with that name. But the "weird tale" behind Fiber's post is indeed a great story for this thread. from Wikipedia The Ghost of Tom Joad Tour was a lengthy, worldwide concert tour featuring Bruce Springsteen performing alone on stage in small halls and theatres, that ran off and on from late 1995 through the middle of 1997. It followed the release of his 1995 album The Ghost of Tom Joad.
The tour began on November 21, 1995 at the State Theatre in New Brunswick, New Jersey. The first group of shows ran through the end of the year in major media centers such as Los Angeles, the San Francisco area, Washington, Philadelphia, New York, and Boston. ... A family man with three small children at the time, Springsteen took off the summer of 1996 and then started up again in the U.S. in mid-September, now playing smaller markets and colleges, as well as local stops in Asbury Park and his old St. Rose of Lima School in Freehold, and finishing up in mid-December.

An unexpected twist to the Ghost Stories, Urban Legends and Weird Tales perhaps? But YOU SIR, are correct!!! Springsteens "The Ghost" of Tom Joad tour 1996..., playing smaller markets and colleges, as well as local stops in Asbury Park and his old St. Rose of Lima School in Freehold, and finishing up in mid-December. I am shocked that NO ONE was on the ball with this sooner!!!

Anyone have anything else to add to this?
I recall a story about a meteor that crashed into a house. Not sure if that was in the Township.
