I wanted to take a moment to thank all those involved in helping to improve the speeding issue on Murray Street.
Murray Street is a wide, straight street which is often used as a cut-through from Route 79/Broadway and the courthouse/jail/Pond Road and back again. For a residential street, it's quite well traveled. Unfortunately, some people enjoy hitting the gas pedal a little too hard when driving on the 25mph street. If you were to sit on the porch and watch the cars throughout the day, you'd see speeding knows no bounds. You see all ages, races, and types of vehicles. Some on cell phones, some not. You even see the occasional nose picker who apparently doesn't think anyone can see them!
One can set their watch to the shift changes at the Monmouth County Jail. At (or around) 2:04 pm and 10:04 pm on any given day of the week or weekend, a caravan of speeders, talking on cell phones, and wearing their blue uniforms come speeding down our street to Route 79. It's terrifying. (There, of course, is a shift change early in the morning, though I can't comment on it as I've never witnessed the cars at that time)
Shortly after our family moved to Murray Street, I wrote a letter to the Mayor and Council of Freehold regarding the issue and immediately heard from both Councilman Marc Levine and Chief Roth. Signs were installed on the sides of the street, as well as in the middle of the road, yellow and white lines were painted, and new stop signs were installed. Even a meeting in council chambers was conducted with Joe Bellina and Freehold Borough police officers for all residents on Murray Street to attend and discuss our concerns and possible solutions.
I recently contacted Mr. Levine to revisit the speeding issue on Murray Street, as Spring time seems to bring out the speeders. He was genuine in helping to suggest ideas and in getting this matter sent to members of the police department. Shortly after an officer was at my door to discuss the problems and help to find solutions and suggestions.
Chief Roth stopped by our home yesterday afternoon. He wanted to let me know that they contacted the Monmouth County Jail and put them on notice. He also mentioned that they're looking into other measures to help keep our, and all streets in Freehold Borough, safe. He was very nice and showed concern, and I appreciate him making a house call. In turn, I delivered a hand written thank you note to him at the station.
I really do appreciate all the help and attention we've received from Councilman Levine, Chief Roth, the police department, and those in the Borough who are responsible with helping me and the residents on Murray Street. The way to a better town is through us all pulling together and working together and I've seen that time and time again here in Freehold Borough.
Thank you~
