FREEHOLD — The borough Planning Board conditionally approved an application Wednesday to build a wireless communications facility on a West Main Street building.
Planning Board members approved the request from MetroPCS New York for a conditional use permit to construct the facility on 10 W. Main St. They also gave preliminary and final site plan approval, with three conditions.
The conditions are: the company must try not to impinge on Main Street during construction, must submit its plans to the borough's Historic Preservation Committee for review and must provide the Planning Board engineer with structural calculations for the roof's ability to handle the facility's equipment.
Planning Board members gave their approval Wednesday after hearing testimony from five witnesses for MetroPCS, presented by the applicant's attorney, Michael Beck of Toms River. Despite the opportunity to speak, there was no public comment.
MetroPCS brought the Planning Board application because it wants to place six antennae on the building, which houses several businesses including the Simply Chocolate store.
Four of the antennae would be hidden inside two fake chimneys that would rise about 15 feet off the top of the building. The chimneys would resemble brick, to match the building facade.
Another two antennae would be mounted along the side of the building facing Court Street, according to pictures submitted to the Planning Board.
Associated radio and battery equipment would be installed on a lower roof, located in the back of the building. The equipment would be screened from view behind 7-foot high panels that would match the building facade, according to documents submitted to the board.
