As readers have seen, I had started a thread on this meeting for just the budget. This thread is for what else happened in the meeting not related to the budget.
Other than the budget, it was a light meeting with highlights surrounding many good aspects of our community. One note of mention, the mayor was absent and the meeting was run by council president Mike Dibenidetto.
The room was PACKED! We saw the retirement of the Chief of the fire department, Chief Nushart. We then saw three promotions, Jack Reichman as the new Chief, Ryan Baily as the new Assistant Chief, and Daniel Megill as the second assistant Chief. Councilwoman Shutzer did the swearing in of the new promotions.
We then saw the Memorial Day Parade awards handed out to several groups who marched in the parade. Alice Mcobb handed the awards out with Councilman Schnur who is the liaison to the committee. The following is a partial list of who won awards:
Colts Neck ROTC, M.A.S.T. color guard, Freehold Independent, Adelphia Fire Department, Youth soccer league, Freehold High School marching band, Freehold little league, Monmouth County 4-H club, Knights of Columbus, First Presbyterian Church, and the Corporal Phillips Marine Corps Detachment.
Pictures of many of the above are found on the home pages of this site.
Special thanks were given to Joseph Jennings for the use of the Caisson Carriage.
AS mentioned, the bulk of regular business centered around the budget. We have another thread for that.
Public Comments
Several people did get up and express concerns that included complaints about taxi drivers, speeding on Stokes street, and bikes on sidewalks.
One resident brought up energy costs and their impact on the town. This turned into a good discussion. The basic question was if the town was doing anything to audit and reduce costs. This is definitely an issue that should continue to be discussed.
One resident did ask about the budget and had to ask to find out how much it was.
AS mentioned in an earlier thread, I asked about the rental committee. I will not go back into that again. I also referenced the article about the FCP and discussions on bringing in new stores. I asked if this was tied into the down town vision study, if the vision study was done, and if so, open to public review. I was informed that the vision study will be done within a month or so, I believe July. I was informed that it will be open for public review.
I also publicly praised councilman Sims for his dissent on the Kruise Nite issues. Although I am glad that we still have the event, I think he was right in stepping up and voicing the concerns he did.
