Re-enactors to mark 230 years since battle

MANALAPAN — This weekend, the annual Battle of Monmouth re-enactment will get a little closer to reality, Monmouth Battlefield State Park historian Garry Wheeler Stone hopes.
The 230th anniversary of one of the largest fights of the American Revolution, the Battle of Monmouth, will be commemorated Saturday and Sunday at the Monmouth Battlefield State Park. The weekend will be marked by re-enactments of the historic battle, performed by about 1,000 re-enactors expected to descend on the park.
They will be joined this year by about 30 horses and mules donated by local organizations, residents and farms, which will allow each side's commanding officers to ride into battle on horseback, Stone said. In past years, not enough horses were available to do so.
Stone described watching a general walk into battle, as was done in previous re-enactments, as an "affront."
"Can you imagine General (Dwight D.) Eisenhower walking (into battle)?" Stone asked.
Each side will also have dragoons — mounted light infantry carrying sabers — and aides-de-camp for the generals, Stone said.
"It's the way you would expect to see the general," said Stone.
Besides the main attraction, this weekend's celebration will include guided camp tours, children's wooden musket drills, artillery demonstrations and presentations on the lives of women in the Continental Army. Sutlers, or peddlers, will also be set up near the Visitor Center to sell everything from Revolutionary War uniforms to DVDs, according to a release.
The re-enactments, slated to begin at 3 p.m. Saturday and 1:30 p.m. Sunday, can be viewed in the "natural amphitheater" north of the Visitor Center.
Seating will be in three tiers: ground or blanket seating just behind safety lines that will be set up, lawn chairs in the middle and standing at the top of the hill.
Stone recommends visitors arrive about one hour before the battle re-enactment begins.
"I think it's just going to be a great re-enactment," Stone said.
