www.app.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20080424/GETPUBLISHED/804240690/-1/HOMETOWNSAfter six weeks of "going back to school," members of the first Citizen's Academy received their certificates of completion at a recent Freehold Borough Board of Education meeting. Sixteen borough residents participated in the two-hour per week, six-week program designed to give an in-depth look at how the district functions, its responsibility to federal and state laws and mandates, and the elements that are unique to Freehold Borough. Topics covered ranged from developing an annual budget with a complete understanding of funding sources and expenses, state curriculum requirements, student support services, standardized testing, record keeping, and roles and responsibilities of administration, faculty, staff, and volunteers. The response to the course was positive with participants noting that they know understand the issues that boards of education and school administrators must work with in order to run an effective district. During a final evaluation, they concluded that Freehold Borough School District is well run with excellent academic credentials. Anyone interested in participating in the next Citizen's Academy, which has not yet been scheduled, should contact the board office at 732-761-2102.

There it is, folks, it looks like the schools are looking for more people for another session. I highly recommend signing up and taking the time to attend. It will be well worth your time.

I think a better course would be for those same people to go to St. Rose or to "successful" schools to learn what they do (don't jump on me - I put things in quotes). So Brian, why don't you go ask Sister Pat what she does to keep costs down, all the while giving a first class education?
Of course, I don't agree with the fundamentals of this course - spending taxpayer money to educate a few taxpayers, some of which were not even residents of the town. Can you beleive that? not even residents, and we spent money on them so they can monitor their special interests? wow, what hubris on their part, and what idiocy on ours.

It would be great to do a side by side comparison of the public schools vs St Rose. 8000 dollars per child vs 4000 dollars per should and what we get from each. Make no mistake, the public schools are jammed with many more mandates that private are. That makes a world of difference. Read this post by Bergsteiger freeholdvoice.proboards46.com/index.cgi?board=schools&action=display&thread=3255and then read the post I added by George will on this thread freeholdvoice.proboards46.com/index.cgi?board=schools&action=display&thread=3245also, I do not believe tax funds from our property taxes were used for the academy.

I understand that there are differences between the public and private and that the public schools have requirements that private do not, but... I am sure there is plenty to learn by that sid by side comparison. What about contributions for PTA? what does that represent and is spent in any special way?

Novillero, Why don't you sign up for the next citizens academy? It will be well worth your time, trust me. no thanks. I don't want to take a class on the borough with out of town LLA/Casa Freehold members. I'll save the brainwashing for other things in my life.

Here again, the school district is offering up a chance for the public to better learn about how the school is run, and at least one member of the public responds by accusing the district of brainwashing people. I guess some people will never be happy unless the schools are run exactly the way they want them to be run...and yet, none of these people step up to actually run for the BOE...interesting.

I have had people ask me to run for BOE. I told them it would be the equivalent of putting Casa Freehold in charge of border security.

But I like your answer: run for the BOE. My apologies if I misunderstood your joke...a tense day at work could have prevented my sense of humor from picking that up. As for Brian running for the BOE...actually, I don't think your analogy is correct...given your opinions on public education and schools in the past, you would hardly be a non-presence in a BOE situation, unlike Casa Freehold, who I expect would protect and defend the border with the same vigor that Rosie O'Donnell protects and defends Donald Trump.
