More than $1 million in bonds could go toward several construction projects in the borough, including major road work and water utility equipment repairs.
The Borough Council introduced three ordinances at its March 24 meeting to authorize the issuance of bonds totaling $1,196,150. A public hearing on the ordinances is scheduled for April 7.
The largest ordinance deals with a $1,280,000 project for work related to repairing four roads in the borough: Center, Court and Conover streets and Ward Avenue.
The Council wants to issue $842,750 worth of bonds for the project. The majority of the remaining cost will be paid through state and federal grants.
The plan is to reconstruct Center Street from Main Street to the town line, Borough Administrator Joseph Bellina said.
Drainage basins have collapsed and need to be repaired. Sewer lines need to be replaced in sections. And the entire road needs to be milled and resurfaced, Bellina said.
The work will likely be done this summer, he said.
On Court Street, downtown improvements will be continued there with additions like lighting, sidewalks and crosswalks, Bellina said. That project is expected to begin in the fall.
Projects on Conover Street and Ward Avenue won't begin in earnest until 2009, but the borough plans to complete engineering design work this year, Bellina said.
A second ordinance introduced was for the issuance of $95,000 in bonds, which would pay for underground water and sewer line work on Center Street, Bellina said. The borough is appropriating a total of $100,000 for the project, according to the ordinance.
A third ordinance would issue $258,400 in bonds for a project totaling $272,000.
