this was a shocker , "Bobbie Crawford's' Moving to Howell, guess he was so taken back with the prospect of an olive garden in his garden, he's sandbagging the borough for lower tax, fully funded schools, day laborer free... Howell, so heres the BIG "Q"....whos mayor mikes next hand picked appointment? Would Mike Panter make the move to the Borough for a political appointment? He will be available in January. How about professor Frankie Argote Fyererererer, he's got da'brians and da'braun. He can feed his ego further with the prospect of running for Mayor as his first term ends. who else has their name in the hat? Mr. Geo? A woman? A School board member? Well whom ever it is, there is a warm rubber stamp and chair waiting.

Did they carry Crawford's body out to a standing ovation?
Did everyone sing Amazing Grace as he was taken from the building?
I bet you tonight two borough engineers are working over time to dismantle the complicated foot and pedal system the mayor had installed several years ago when Crawford passed onto the Promised Land.
Godspeed to you Councilman Crawford -- REST IN PEACE.
Casually Praying for You

www.app.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20071203/NEWS/71203037FREEHOLD — Borough Councilman Robert Crawford resigned his seat Monday night because he is moving to a retirement community in Howell. "I'm going to miss all of you,'' Crawford, 75, told the audience assembled for Monday's meeting, during which he read aloud his farewell letter. "It has been my honor to have served the residents of our community for the past 11 years,'' he read from his farewell letter. Crawford, a Democrat, has served on the council since 1997. After Crawford announced his resignation, the council and some members of the audience stood to applaud him. "You really epitomize public service here in town,'' said Mayor Michael Wilson. -- Kim Predham

I think the obvious choice for the Mayor and Council is a woman of strong convictions, a record of selfless service, an ability to be bi-partisan, and a toughness to not simply toe the line.
She should have been the first choice on the last open seat, and maybe she didn't want it.
But I would think that the very classy Mrs. Stella Mays would be the right choice here. (Hopefully my endorsement doesn't sink her.)
Of course, if the Council really isn't about party or politics on the local level as we hear all the time, then a great choice would be to reach across the isle and pick Ted Miller. The Council will still be completely controlled by the Democrats -- they would not even have to second his motions if they disagreed.
Here is a guy who stepped up and ran hard, representing a completely unheard set of voices in the Borough.
That would impress me -- but then I would think I have a better chance of opening presents at the Mayor's house on Christmas day then seeing that type of true, non-politically motivated, bi-partisanship.
Here's a better idea -- why not forego the "appointment issue" and put the vote to the people in a special election? Yummy. Imagine that type of real democracy and choice.
One would be intrigued to see the turnout and result in a special election where Nation, state, and county machines are not turning out voters. Let the People choose -- this too would allow those who really want the job, to step up and work for the job.
Sorry -- jsut a few hurtful words from the outsider.

a much better write up from the APP.... www.app.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20071204/NEWS01/712040394/1004FREEHOLD — Borough Councilman Robert Crawford resigned his seat Monday night because he is moving to a retirement community in Howell. "I'm going to miss all of you," Crawford, 75, told the audience assembled for Monday's meeting, during which he read aloud his farewell letter. "It has been my honor to have served the residents of our community for the past 11 years," he read. "I have been privileged to be a part of a dedicated and progressive-thinking governing body." Crawford, a Democrat, has served on the council since 1997. He and Councilman Michael DiBenedetto ousted Councilman Marc LeVine, then a Republican who now sits on the board as a Democrat, and John P. Rosseel, also a Republican. Crawford served on the borough's Planning Board for one year before joining the council, he said Monday. Crawford has been a lifelong resident of the borough, he said. He and his wife, Barbara, are moving to The Villages, an adult community in Howell. Monday night was his last council meeting. Crawford was most recently re-elected in 2005. He would have been up for re-election again in 2008. The mayor and council have the authority to appoint his replacement, Crawford said. He did not know who, if anyone, was being considered, or when someone might be appointed. After Crawford announced his resignation Monday, the council and some members of the audience stood to applaud him. "You really epitomize public service here in town," said Mayor Michael Wilson. Fellow council members paid similar compliments to Crawford, and even his one-time opponent had kind words for the man. "I've always believed he was a winner," LeVine said. "He's a warm, caring, kind and bright individual." Kim Predham: (732) 308-7752 or kpredham@app.com

a portion of an article linked above by Libyan Sybil...
In commenting on Le Vine’s appointment, Frank-Argote Freyre, Monmouth County coordinator of the Latino Leadership Alliance of New Jersey, said Mayor Michael Wilson has “repeatedly shown insensitivity to the Latino and African-American communities,” which according to Argote-Freyre make up 50 percent of the borough’s population.
“Wilson is blind to the changing face of our community,” Argote-Freyre said in a press release. “Rather than using the recent resignation of a council member to appoint an African-American or a Latino, he has chosen to appoint a nativist, antagonistic to the Latino community.”
In an interview, Argote-Freyre said, “In the mayor’s 20-year leadership of the borough he has never appointed an African-American or a Latino to the Borough Council, even though 40 to 50 percent of the borough’s population is made up of those two groups. Nowhere has he appointed or promoted an African-American or a Latino candidate so that they could run for council, even though in the last round of appointments he could have considered two minorities.
“When is it enough time to have an African-American or a Latino on that governing body? Not only does he not select a candidate with diverse opinions who would bring those opinions to the council, but he selects someone who has antagonized the Latino community,” he said.
I love it when someone points out apathy on the "other side" of the issues. If the Latino and African American community were so upset over Mayor Wilson's lack of attention to them over the last 20 years, you would think they would show up to vote the man out of office!! It almost warms my heart to see that apathy runs within all groups.
As for Stella getting the appointment...I think that would be fantastic!! I got to work with Stella briefly on the BOE, and believe me, she's no push-over. If Mayor Wilson actually had the gumption to appoint Stella, I would actually congratulate him on finally making a good decision.

Since I have lived here, I have seen two appointments to council--LeVine and Sims. Both of them were very good picks and if the Mayor continues with this track record we will have little to worry about.

The reason he likely did not appoint her last time is -- because she is no push-over. (of course, she may not want anythign to do with the job either.) Mrs. Mays is a doer. Her years of service were just that service and commitment. I think jumping into a very political partisan circumstance, probably is not real appealing. Having said that -- I am sure she would serve if called to do so.

The nice thing about being FAF is he knows he is calling the show now. He knows the Borough is in full retreat because -- to his credit -- he has proven he can deliver political, legal, PR, and grass-roots pressure. If you look at what has happened since Marc was appointed, it is clear what is going on. By appointing Marc the PEOPLE group is decapitated by the Governing body. Next, Mayor Wilson appoints Mr. Simms, who has not distinguished himself in any way, and was clearly not the most qualified candidate. He did, however, fit the bill with respect to one of FAF's criteria. He was a member of the African American community -- though not a strong, well established candidate. That fills the other political criteria, which assures that the Mayor not be butting heads and dealing with a strong appointment. Now -- I do think the Mayor's back is to the wall on this appointment. FAF is going to demand that a Hispanic be appointed. The Mayor may shock the world and call a special election to let the people decide. This will be interesting to watch.

OK so is this the example of the last HRC agenda...3 years ago. This article illustrates a dysfunctional Human Relations Committee today it seems to have worsened into non-functional committee. How does an appointment of a nonresident lobbyist from The World Workers Party Splinter Group - Casa Freehold, in this case Mr. Reyes, add functionality unless the HRC now serve as the World Workers Party Splinter Group - Casa Freehold Welcoming Committee. And why is every committee appointee not held to the same measure of qualification? This article also illustrates how FF appears to manifest the same dysfunctional disregarded as was attempted with the rental advisory committee he served. Who appoints unpopular disruptive influences anyway?
