www.app.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20080317/NEWS/80317040/1285/LOCAL09FREEHOLD — With purse subsidies for the harness horse races at Freehold Raceway expected to be on the way, track management is increasing the amount paid out in purses starting next week. A 7 percent increase in the purses will begin on March 28, according to the association representing horsemen and horsewomen. Track officials could not be reached for comment. A three-year $90 million purse supplement was approved by the state Assembly and now is before the state Senate. Tom Luchento, president of the Standardbred Breeders and Owners Association, said, "'This is the first step in restoring the purses to the level they were at prior to the cuts they made earlier this year. We have also been assured that there will be another bump in purses in another week or so. This is a start in the right direction."
